Unless I'm missing something, you can't just "convert" a wav to sf2. Soundfonts are a container or wrapper if you will. Even a simple SF2 with one wav will follow the same guidelines. What you need is a SF2 editor. Get the editor called Polyphone. It's free and will get the job done.

Polyphone is an excellent SF2 editor. Recommended.

However, I have a problem with SF2 files similar to REX [Recycle] files - poor quality SRC conversion which uses linear interpolation. The worst of all. :( You can circumvent that by converting WAV files yourself with r8brain free. It's got great SRC. OTOH the advantage of SF2 is having everything in one file so they load faster.

Due to my habit of using only 96/48kHz 24-bit WAVs, I often use SFZ [with TAL-Sampler], because it leaves the files untouched, but you get a folder full of files per sound. That can be circumvented by making ISO files, though. Put a lot of SFZ sounds into a folder and make ISO from it which you can mount easily as CD/DVD/BR.

As for REX files, the solution is using Acidised files made in Sound Forge, for example. Acidised WAVs can be of any WAV format. Just some bonus info...

My preferred way to create such sample banks is to use an old Kontakt version (v3.5 works well), drag and drop all the samples, tweak a little if necessary, save the nki and convert it using Extreme Sample Converter.
Kontakt is also quite sophisticated at importing and mapping samples by their name as long as they have some remotely usable names.
