Who needs it: startup promises pain in metaverse VR

A Japanese startup wants to make it possible for users of a Metaverse environment to also feel pain. From the founder's point of view, this should make the user experience much closer to reality than before.
"The feeling of pain allows us to turn the world of the metaverse into a real world, with an enhanced sense of presence and immersion," Emi Tamaki, chief executive of H2L, told the U.K. business daily Financial Times. But since there are bound to be users for whom a proper pain experience isn't high on their wish list, they're looking to implement other sensations as well.

With a somewhat finer tuning of the stimuli, it should also be possible to simulate the impression of weight and resistance. The necessary stimuli are all to be transmitted to the user's body via a simple wristband. Of course, the signals transmitted in this way will remain limited to a restricted area of the body for the time being.

    Big plans

However, H2L naturally has bigger plans. Within the next ten years, Tamaki wants to further develop the technology so that users can be almost completely detached from their real world and offered complete sensory impressions in a virtual environment. She is receiving financial support for this work from the electronics company Sony, among others.

The idea for developing the haptic wearable came to her after she had a near-death experience in her late teens due to a congenital heart defect, according to the report. "I realized that life is precious, so I decided to work on a new area that I really wanted to explore, since there was no one researching it at the time," Tamaki explained.

Don't need to follow all this coy research.
Either the porn industry has implemented tactile interfaces or it just isn't working yet.
    Why beat around the bush?:hahaha:

So true... that's the one and only research the world needs to follow

Besides, one would think there's simpler solutions for the pain shit. How many watts can deliver a USB4 again?

Pleasure cannot be defined as the absence of pain. "... startup wants to make it possible for users of a Metaverse environment to also feel pain...". ""The feeling of pain allows us to turn the world of the metaverse into a real world, with an enhanced sense of presence and immersion".

Pleasure should be the baseline, and since it is not the whole venture seems to me to be going in the direction of defining on "their" terms how exactly the human condition should be and could be to further an agenda dictated by the need to manage humanity. There is absolutely no need for a Metaverse unless the Humanverse is so horrific that humanity needs to form a cacoon or buffer in order to function in the new order of fascism on the horizon sweeping from west to east. Computer simulation of the real world is not about fun and games but rather how to focus minds in a predetermined direction, complete control of every aspect of a person's life and wellbeing and the ability to turn off one's access to finances while crippling the real ability to function without access to that fabricated Metaverse. Imagine not having access to the internet for a day, a week, and because of that you cannot buy food, pay rent (ownership won't soon be a thing except for the very wealthy and which is happening now) or start your vehicle be it a bicycle, motorcycle or automobile.

Fuck the Metaverse, 5G and anything else that is toxic and freedom bleeding.

This reminds me of a book, namely Iain M. Banks' "Surface Detail" which has an alien civilization that uses virtual reality/existence for virtualized afterlife, namely Hell, torture and punishment.

You think some bright spark will not bring it to us eventually using tech like this, eventually?

Great book BTW, but not the best book to start with Banks, but do read "Consider Phlebas" by him, you'll thank me.
