the RAM upgrades on all the m1 Macs are very expensive. Even the mini, the price almost doubles.
It's almost more worthwhile if you did get 2, and then run one under Audiogridder, the way they have the ram upgrades priced. It's very close, but with a second processor.

the one you posted is 700 euros difference for 16gb upgrade. wow. that is some UAD shit right there. lol

How should I know if it suits your needs ? As mentioned before , just buy one and test, if it is to slow for you return it.

    ---
The M2 supposed to have a higher single core performance, and if it will replace the M1 it might be teh same price ?

It's not that price is important, I mean, yes, pricing is important but at the same time I want top be pretty sure and confident about the product lasting performance wise for at least 5-6 years or better 10 years. That's the reason I changed the decision from y'all help from mac mini m1 to MBP 14" m1 Pro and I want to get it at the most best deal available. Am I thinking right about this?

No parts are upgradable on an M1 machine. You configure it before buying and that's it. This is what I saw on net and the others comments in this thread. So might as well configure an M1 machine with 10 years shelf life and get along with buying it when an awesome deal on it appears. What do you think of this thought?

So far I think your views and decisions are correct.
However, Mac is also designed in such a way that you can't update it.
Let's look into the future, the M2 is on the horizon - why not wait and buy the M2? I say yes you have between two models and options, if you were to buy a MAC next year the current one would already be obsolete.
You will be very happy with the Mac, but the M2 would of course be more sensible and future-proof.

As early as May or June, the first Apple devices with M2 chips are expected to come onto the market.

Before launch of M1 Ultra & M2: Apple MacBook Air & MacBook Pro M1 on sale

The first Macs with the M2 chip are expected to come onto the market as early as May, and the M1 Ultra will celebrate its premiere on March 18th. However, before the Apple MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro M2 raise the bar, Apple devices such as the Mac Book Air/Pro M1 are in a price slide and can be bought particularly cheaply from Amazon.

Apple presented new products at the most recent keynote on March 8th, thereby further accelerating the fall in prices for the "old" models before the launch of the Apple M1 Ultra and M2 chips. After Apple has already equipped numerous devices with the M1 chipset developed by ARM, the successor SoC is scheduled to be launched this year. The M2 chip is said to offer up to 10 GPU cores, but the CPU performance only increases slightly, as Mark Gurman from the US magazine Bloomberg supposedly knows. The new SoC is to be used in Apple laptops such as the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or Mac Mini. But not only the statements of the US journalist point to the start of M2.M1 Ultra forestalls

What should Apple's M2 offer in MacBook Air/Pro, Mac mini & Co.?

According to Gurman, the first devices from Apple with the M2 include the 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop and the MacBook Air M2 shouldn't be long in coming either. After that, the successor to the M1 chip will be used in the iMac 24 inch and Mac Mini. While many apps had to be reprogrammed for the M1, the comparable architecture of the upcoming SoC eliminates this work. Unsurprisingly, the Apple M2 is said to be based on the same 8-core architecture as the M1, but with slightly faster CPU cores. Compared to the 7 or 8 GPU cores of M1 devices, up to 10 GPU cores will take over the graphics calculations in the future. Pro and Max versions of the M2 with even more cores are to follow in 2023. Since Apple wants to move away from Intel processors completely, the M2 Pro and M2 Max should also be installed in the top-of-the-line iMac 27-inch model.

"10 years" and "Apple" in one sentence is far from realistic. After 5 years, Apple computers are "vintage" and will not be supported or repaired by Apple. If you're lucky, nothing fails or you can find a 3rd party repair center.

As a long time Logic user since the 90s, I made the switch to Apple just because of Logic, bought new hardware because new versions of Logic needed newer versions of macOS which again needed new hardware to run. I'm so tired of this and chose to stay at Logic 10.4.8 to exchange projects with people I'm working together with and they also chose not to upgrade. For mixing and mastering I changed to Reaper many years ago and can use Windows or macOS on whatever hardware I want.

The guy right here, UNLEASHES every bit of the mac mini 8 GB RAM, using logic Pro X. Can anybody please confirm if what he shows in the video is ACTUALLY LEGIT, in there most truest of its sense?

    This video

Can't believe what he showed in the video really. That's how powerful the m1 Mac mini is? Please do confirm guys. Thanks a lot.

So even Pro Tools Performance has been tested on a 16 GB MBP M1. Great. Can this be taken as one more point of convincing for me to go with 16 GB M1 mac mini and it will handle music production, mixing and mastering for 10 more years? With NO heavy VSTs but, decently heavy plugins on each channel and ATM 8-10 channels. Might increase up to 20 channels eventually.

Awesomeee. Thank you for this super clarification. One more step towards fixing on Mac mini M1 16 GB. Great. Please tell me, how many times on an average do you feel or felt the need of Intel based Mac cuz some plugins or vsts aren't yet developed for the M1?

Apple M1 - How the change from Intel processors to Apple Silicon works
by Thomas Schimmack, April 11, 2021

What can we expect from Apple's new chips, how do audio software manufacturers view the system change, and what still needs to be done before the smooth switchover?

When Apple announced the switch to ARM Macs at the last developer conference (WWDC) in April 2020, a certain euphoria was quickly felt. At the same time, we knew from the past that it could also be a rocky road.

It is not the first fundamental system change at Apple. Already the change to Intel as processor supplier was a small revolution 15 years ago. As then, the development of new processors was too slow for Apple. They were more and more dissatisfied with Intel's chips. This time, they wanted to finally become independent of other manufacturers.

Everything is supposed to be faster, more efficient and better coordinated - and that can only be in the interest of us sound professionals. The prospect of a powerful, mobile workstation that can smoothly process large amounts of audio tracks without starting up a fan like a turbine sounds tempting. I've been using Macs since the 90s, and my current machine, a MacBook Pro 16" has not only been my most expensive Mac to date, but also the one I've been most disappointed with. And the permanently running fans are at the top of my list!

So I'm all the more curious to see how things will turn out with the new M1 Macs. Can an Apple-owned ARM processor, which was originally developed for the iPhones and iPads, have enough power for professional demands at all? And will this changeover be able to go smoothly?
If you listen to Apple, everything seems to be excellently prepared, because just like 15 years ago, there is a kind of translator for the transition period, which prepares Intel-optimized code for the new processor in the background.

Rosetta 2 is the name of this magic box and is supposed to make practically everything run on the M1 immediately. Apple has improved on the original idea of the first generation of Rosetta, which simply emulated the old PPC chip. This time, Rosetta 2 creates a preliminary translation in custom code the first time the software is run. This is supposed to use fewer resources and be much faster, but it does not replace native support for the new processor in the long run. So does Rosetta 2 use up the announced speed advantage right away?

First experience reports on the net seem to justify the initial euphoria, though. Apple's great promises regarding the performance of the new computers really seem to arrive in everyday life.

But what about plug-ins and audio software?

We asked many manufacturers and developers of well-known audio tools what they think of Apple Silicon, what the status of the changeover is and what plans and prospects there are.

During the research, some companies were very open and reported on their successes already achieved, others were rather cagey and only want to talk about it when the switchover is successful. Some report only minimal adjustments that were necessary, while others do not plan to complete the elaborate porting until sometime in 2021. However, it seems clear that all manufacturers who used Apple's "Quick Start Program" directly for the porting are clearly at an advantage. Immediately after the announcement, Apple had given developers the opportunity to borrow a MacMini with a predecessor variant of the new processor for a certain period of time, in order to be able to start directly with the adaptation. After all, Apple has set a sporty goal with a transition period of two years!

Developers who have always relied on the current development environments in the past or already offer versions for iOS will probably have it easier now, too. However, those who now have to take several major development steps at once will have more to contend with. For example, there are still many plug-ins, some of them central, that are still based on the outdated VST2 technology. Is that going to be a problem? Kontakt from Native Instruments is one such example, but Air Music Technology and Soundtoys are also still based on VST2.

In fact, much of it seems to work surprisingly well under Rosetta 2.

A sticking point with plug-ins seems to be that ideally both the host (e.g. the DAW) and the plug-in itself should be adapted to the new chip. Otherwise, probably only the Rosetta-translated variant will work if the host also runs only with Rosetta. A mixed operation in a project is not intended in the transition phase.

At the same time as the switch to Apple Silicon, there was also the annual update of the macOS operating system to version 11 (Big Sur). Every year, Apple also introduces small and large challenges for developers, which make adjustments to the software necessary. Many manufacturers, first of all those of the DAWs, take their responsibility for stable running production systems very seriously and focus for the time being on the Intel variants of their software. This is also very important, because Apple will continue to support these ubiquitous computers for many years to come. Nevertheless, many users are already eagerly waiting for the updates. The lure of a quiet and powerful computer is just great.

In this series of articles, we want to observe and accompany how everything develops. What can the new M1 do, what advantages do sound professionals have from the new technology? Is everything as great as many say, or are they just bloated iPhones that suddenly want to be a computer? Or will even the iOS platform sustainably benefit from this change? Can a computer with a mere 16GB really handle gigantic sample libraries virtuously, how Pro are the Pro computers and are the fans finally no longer annoying?
Are there perhaps also tools that we have to say goodbye to forever?

We will also compare the performance on current Intel Macs with that on the M1. It promises to be an exciting time, because so far only the entry-level Macs are even on the market!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Timeline:
2005: Apple announces switch from PowerPC to Intel chips Switch is facilitated with the help of Rosetta as PowerPC emulation
July 2011: Switch completely finished (Rosetta no longer part of the operating system)
June 2020: Apple announces on the WWDC change from Intel to own chip (Apple Silicon)
November 2020: first Macs are introduced, among them a MacBook Pro 13".
2022: Switch should be completely finished.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Background (terms):
The name of the first generation of Apple's self-developed computer processors (Apple Silicon) is M1. It is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) based on ARM technology. Simply put, it is a complete system that combines all the central functions of a computer in one chip. This enables a low-power design (and thus lower heat generation) with very high performance. The development of the Apple Silicon originated from the processors of the iPhones and iPads (currently A14 Bionic). The current M1 systems are so far only available with 8GB or 16GB RAM and this cannot be expanded later.

In order for a software to take advantage of the new system, it has to be natively adapted to it. This means that the software code is optimally adapted to the "language" of the Apple silicon. As an interim solution, Apple has integrated the "translation software" Rosetta 2 into the current operating system (macOS Big Sur). This creates a preliminary M1-native version of the original Intel x86 code the first time a program or plug-in is started. This allows many programs to run elegantly on the new devices, but does not replace an individual adaptation of the software.
