Thank you for replying. I agree with your views. But, i don't want to keep worying about the ram getting full or having multiple system overload pop ups while producing, mixing n mastering music, with rather decent number of plugins on each channel and there'll be 8-10 tracks in a project of mine.

If you had a similar situation or were in my place, what'd be your move? Do help me out. Thanks again.

You are in a real vacuum right now.
Your Macbook is really outdated and no longer meets modern requirements.
The new one won't come until the second half of 2022 or 2023.

Read the coming lines with relish, what the coming Mac generation can and will offer you.
If you are patient now and just wait, you will get the latest of the latest - a top high-tech product.
Just be a part of the newest and most current technology.
Patience is required - just wait until Christmas.

Rumor: First M2 chip in second half of 2022, M2 Pro in 2023
    Chinese site with new info

If you order a Mac these days, you will get a model with one of Apple's current M1 processors. However, it can be assumed that a new generation of Apple's silicon chips will be launched sooner or later. Until now, there were hardly any rumors or forecasts on this topic, which is now changing with a report from the Chinese-language websiteCommercial Times. There, they present a timeline for the appearance of Apple's new processors.

The article suggests that the Apple processor referred to as "M2" could be launched in the second half of 2022 with the codename "Staten". The high-end M2 Pro or M2 Max chip (codenamed "Rhodes") is expected to be released in the first half of 2023.
Production by TSMC in the 4-nanometer process?

Apparently, the well-known Apple supplier TSMC will again be responsible for the production, which is supposed to manufacture the processors in a 4-nanometer process. This could lead to an even better performance and more efficiency. By comparison, the current M1/M1 Pro/M1 Max chips are manufactured in a 5-nanometer process.

In October 2020, Apple had announced that it would make a complete switch to the specially developed Apple Silicon processors within the next two years. In the meantime, almost all Macs have been equipped with such a chip, only the high-end Mac mini, the 27″ iMac and the Mac Pro are missing from the product range and still rely on an Intel processor so far. Bloomberg recently announced that new iMacs and Mac Pro models will be released in 2022 - so it will be interesting to see when Apple's silicon lineup will be updated accordingly

Tick you for replying. I completely agree with you. Wait a bit and get the latest technology apple has got to offer. Yes. I will hold up to l till Xmas and then see if there are any better deals including price and latest technology. Don't mind me asking this not, if you're from the US, will there be any great deals during Christmas for mac minis? Thanks again.

you basically missed out on one update cycle with the much faster Intels. How slow does your current Mac seem to you? The new one you buy next, will somehow (almost) magically decelerate in almost the exact time frame! planned or "engineered" obsolescence, of course.
It's part of why they write most programs on the fastest machine that is commercially available.

I wouldn't use the term "dead zone" or vacuum to describe it exactly. My general rule of thumb for things (borrowed from automotive), is if it is a new technology (not just example i5->i7 changes) I will wait 1 year, if possible. In this case, many other people will do these upgrade/replacements just to run new software on an m1; like they do with their phones. Which will leave a whole bunch of MacBook Pro i9 laptops with the ssd and ram upgrades to find very cheaply, from owners who got the processor fan revved up once or twice on a college photoshop project or something like that.. finding a deal on a new one will be difficult at best. high demand, low inventory, etc. On top of the fact that's how they always are, either way. I think they do the best job of price fixing they can legally get away with. it's still apple :dunno:

Hi @Nehal, congrats on your decision, it is one of reason. It is now March and what will happen in December is yet to be determined. It's too early for offers. November is when the Christmas battle for buyers' favor begins.

    I think yes,
it may lack some hardware features which future versions of MacOS might utilize (just speculating), but in raw performance, it shall suffice for audio tasks (on a side note, RME just published video on YouTube yesterday, explaining why USB 2.0 is totally sufficient for audio interface handling, instead of fancy Thunderbolt),
also, you'll love its silent operation, it's an underestimated feature of studio computers people tend to overlook
even if it eventually becomes obsolete, I think it's a perfect living room HTPC computer for playing music and watching movies, it can effortlessly handle 4K so again quite futureproof in that regard

Why do you think so?, do you assume that future updates of the same software will require more RAM ?

    <3 indeed

Thank you for replying. I really am not keen on getting any of the awesome amazing displays o keyboards or mouse that apple has got to offer. I just want the machine which is strong and reliable for music production, mixing and mastering of 10-12 tracks, with decent amount of plugins on each channel. Yes, I do use Serum SOMETIMES and that's the only heavy VST I use in my production.

So, do you think the mac mini M1 16 GB RAM be sufficient with the latest OS of apple and it's applications, for 5-6 m more years?

With the M1 Macs, Apple changed more than just the processor architecture.

Unlike most computers, the memory in Apple's processors is not an external unit. Instead,
this is integrated directly into the chip. This has advantages and disadvantages:

Pros and cons in Apple's approach
Most other laptops and calculators are relatively easy to upgrade RAM after purchase. However,
Apple makes this practically impossible. Apple's M1 also only supports 16 GB of RAM so far.

    Faster access means better performance
Faster access to the main memory is possible due to the proximity to the computing units.
This can lead to significant performance gains. The M1 particularly benefits from this.

The new devices with M1 chip

Can I expand the RAM on an M1 Mac?
No. Already at the time of purchase, you have to decide how much RAM you need, which also depends on which SoC it should be. The M1 only goes up to 16 GB, while the M1 Ultra provides up to 128 GB of RAM. But this is the end for now.

Will my hardware and accessories still work with Silicon Macs?
Apple Silicon Macs come with Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, only Macbook Air M1 and Macbook Pro 13'' do not offer other interfaces. If you have been using a Mac with Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, you can connect to the new Macs the same way and your devices should work. The Thunderbolt/USB ports are the same shape and have most of the same technical capabilities.
Wireless connections to the new Mac also work the same as they always have.
If you're using high-end equipment, check with the device manufacturer for compatibility before investing in a new Mac. For a great selection of SChn interfaces, check out Mac Studio. Up to six Thunderbolt 4, USB 3, 10GB Ethernet, and SDXC Card.

    M1 Pro:
    • 5 nanometer process technology

    • 8 or 10 core CPU

    • 6 or 8 performance cores

    • 2 efficiency cores

    • 14 or 16 core graphics processing unit (GPU)

    • 16 core neural engine

    • 16GB or 32GB RAM

    M1 Max:
    • 5 nanometer process technology

    • 10 core CPU

    • 8 performance cores

    • 2 efficiency cores

    • 24- or 32-core graphics processing unit (GPU)

    • 16 core neural engine

    • 32GB or 64GB RAM
The M1 Ultra, according to Apple the last in the line of the M1 family, doubles the M1 Max. Thanks to their fast "Ultra Fusion" connection, the two SoCs behave as one:

    M1 Ultra:
    • 5 nanometer process technology

    • 20 core CPU

    • 16 performance cores

    • 4 efficiency cores

    • 48 or 64 core graphics processing unit (GPU)

    • 32 core neural engine

    • 64GB or 128GB RAM
Apple calls this a system on a chip (SoC) because it brings multiple components that are usually separate onto a single chip. This includes the CPU, GPU, USB and Thunderbolt controllers, Secure Enclave, Neural Engine, image signal processor, audio processing hardware, and more. This results in better performance and battery life.

Thanks for replying. I might as well a bit in order to get a Mac machine that can last without any performance issues regarding my audio production, mixing and mastering use and needs, for at least 5-6 more years. If you're from the US, can you please suggest few shops on which I can keep a watch on for deals? Do help. Thanks again.

no issues here. Just buy one and try if it suits your needs. If not just return it. I did the same and kept mine :)

You can buy a Mac Mini AND buy later a Windows "box" with remote plugins running on it.
It is the "orchestral" way of doing it (that's why Vienna Ensemble Pro and such were created).

Because until you load a bunch of BIG heavy RAM plugins, 16GB can be enough.
If you load a bunch of Kontakts symphonic or similar, it is too small.

On MY personal view, 16GB limitation is a joke on modern computers.
Something seen years and years ago, coming back again.

Apple just created ON PURPOSE a segment.
Like limited memory tablets and phones, whereas it costs NOTHING to put the maximum capacity compared to 1.000+ price

That's why, M1 or not, i built an intel hackintosh

nowadays, Kontakt can stream directly from SSD, without bloating RAM
