You can't build a system in 2022 thinking about 2019 pricing for components. Without current global issues, pricing still would have increased by 10% by now due to inflation.

Stick with a board that has built-in thunderbolt. Much easier to configure and, more stable. There really is no cost savings going with an AIC/Motherboard setup. You need a well designed & equipped board fir the 12900K.

A NUC for your purposes using a 12900K is also not, recommended.

Go with either the ASUS or Gigabyte Z690 creator/workstation boards. Avoid ASrock as they are proving to be unreliable & unstable. Also buggy BIOS.

they have good resale prices, it won't be the end of the world, probably just a couple hundred dollars loss when he does change his mind. After you add like thousands of $$ in plugins is when it gets bad; you are effectively "locked in" to them. Unravelling all of those projects with basically Dongle locked plugins you can barely give away/sell for pennies on the dollar. fun times.

really though, when your audio interface starts heavily dictating what computer you should build; it's worth taking a step back and rethinking your situation. all I'm sayin.

you're totally right, but I can't change their mind. I'm only helping them building a pc :D

 

Change the power supply back to 850W Gold+ or Platinum. This is a minimum specification to ensure voltage & wattage spikes do not caused problems or, permanent damage. If a graphics card is planned to added at some point, think about a 1000W to 1200W power supply. This is the current reality with CPU & GPU power demands.

I am waiting to see what Apple does with the next Mac Mini or Mac Pro 27". By then, AMD should have announced or, released their next generation of CPUs. Intel will follow close behind.

Edit:
Alder Lake is the last CPU for LGA-1700 most likely.
Raptor Lake will be using LGA-1800.

Forget 12th gen Intel. $$$$ buggy. Go 11th, affordable. Asus z590-e is the Killa incl. Thunderbolt. Add i9 11900k, 64gb 4400 ram Crucial, 2 of Samsung 980 pro 2tb, Gigabyte Nvidia Rtx3060 OC. 1000W Crucial 80 platinum psu, Home free. I know. And 2 18tb internal Seagate Exos hdds.

 

Time to move forward on Intel platforms. The correct (not cheap) motherboard & BIOS makes all the difference. Also not overclocking anything but memory helps. since 10th gen Intel, there is very little to be gained for real world use by overclocking.

For audio production, nothing more than the on-board graphics is needed unless you want to drive multiple high resolution displays for some reason. Then you still only need a basic/entry level GPU that fits those needs.

The upcoming Intel GPUs could be a very welcome surprise in Price/Performance.

I would go for AMD cpu, ryzen seems to perform better at heavy tasks than Intel. Actually i9 chockes at 2/3 of the tracks than Ryzen 9 does. I m about to build a pc too and after some google search and youtube videos that compare the 2 cpus, ryzen 9 seems to be more capable than i9 for projects but is not as powerfull for games. Anyway both of these are great

Why a cut down mini ITX motherboard in a ATX case? Makes no sense. If you're going to go UAD, you're well into making a bigger investment anyway. Thunderbolt in general is a premium feature reserved for high end motherboards which _must_ cost a lot more because they don't make as many of them, and frankly very little people buy them because they don't care about 10GbE or Thunderbolt. Going with the cheapest board that has Thunderbolt you're kinda defeating the purpose of a high-end Thunderbolt-capable system.

That board limits you to just 2 RAM slots, max 2x32GB for 64GB total, with ATX you'd get 4x32GB for 128GB. With the 16GB sticks you've chosen that's the difference between being able to just add more 16GB sticks to get 64GB, and being limited to just 32GB.
More importantly, there's just one PCIe slot, so you can forget about adding additional USB ports, NVMe SSDs beyond what the motherboard offers, etc. that way. And just 3 SATA ports, so you'd be limiting your storage upgrade options as well.

 

Why would one care about the manufacturer? They make tons of boards, and all of them have good ones and not so good ones, you pick depending on what is of most value to your specific use case. Buying 4 generations old high-end hardware is hard to justify though, since you'll often be paying similarly to this year's high end - there's not enough used ones around to drive prices down like with low and mid-tier.
