I just learned that oxygen pro has the same exact keybed as the infamous keystation.

so it too gets off the list

Also I heard that the NI komplete kontrol a61 buttons can't be midi mapped and work only with NI software.

It's supposed to be quite good, but you won't know until you've played with it yourself.

The keybed felt quite satisfying – not cheap nor ‘sproingy’ as do most other keyboard controllers occupying the same price range. The generously-proportioned pitch and mod wheels were smooth and precise feeling – free of any kind of loose, easy-to-break taction. In like fashion, all eight of the neatly placed endless-encoder knobs felt silky-smooth, but durable. The kindly included 6 ft’/1.8 metre USB cable seemed to be good quality as well. Last, but not least, I saw that the universal expression/hold pedal and USB-b ports were securely inset into the back panel; both ports provided solid, tight connections.

    TEST: M-AUDIO OXYGEN PRO 25, 49, 61, CONTROLLER-KEYBOARD

The 49 keys are easy to play, you quickly get a feel for how much pressure you need to apply to the lightly weighted keys to trigger the attack. Overall, a clear improvement over the previous versions of the Oxygen series, but in my opinion not on the same level as Novation, Native Instruments or even the corporate brother AKAI - the keyboards of the MPKs, for example, I feel are of higher quality.

It's popular too, so if i have any problems i might get help easier, can't really imagine that if i picked nektar or m-audio.

Im probably overthinking all of this anyway, it's not like i played any instrument with keys on it before. Interestingly i found out that some music notation software such as musescore supports MIDI as well, so that's another use i might check out.

I've been interested in MIDI ever since hearing about it long time ago, i might be a midi enthusiast in the making

Historically "MIDI" is a digital interface from the early 80s to connect different synthesizers or samplers etc. with cables. Today the word midi is used in DAWs to describe notes in any form to be played back by VSTis or connected hardware devices via MIDI cable.

If you want to play any real MIDI hardware like a synth module, you need a MIDI output, it's a 5-pin DIN plug. Most of these controller keyboards only have a USB connector to be used with a DAW, also the A61 by NI. The M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61 has a real MIDI out, and also the Novation Launchkey 61 MK3, that's the one I use.

In the studio i use my old trusted Kurzweil as a "real" master keyboard with 88 keys and hammer mechanic.

To be portable, I use the Launchkey 61. It is super lightweight at 3,4kg, has knobs (which indeed are a bit tiny), faders (i use for organ drawbars) and RGB pads. It is mainly focused on controlling Ableton Live but can be used with any DAW. As I'm also using Live to play VSTis, it's a perfect mobile solution for me. The keybed is of course not weighted and feels kinda plasticky, but I enjoy playing it very much, but thats a matter of taste. And it's also got a real 5-pin MIDI out port, so i can use it to play my old rack synths. The only thing I'm missing is a connection for an expression pedal, you can just connect a sustain pedal, but that's the same with most controllers in this price range.

Midi is a protocol, and an interface. Not just a connector. There is nothing "fake" about midi through usb.

Does it have the same low value potentiometers (yes they are no encoders) as Maschine ?
which die after a few years of usage ?

Isn't that just a technicality ? An encoder by defnition can't rotate 360 degrees so people just mean "potentiometer" when they say "360 encoder". On that matter i think i like potentiometers more than encoders.

Are the potentiometers on A61 of bad quality ?

I never said it's fake. If you only want to use the keyboard connected to a computer, it's fine. But if you ever plan to play any hardware MIDI device directly, you need the 5 pin MIDI connector on the keyboard. I just mentioned it because you wrote that you are very interested in MIDI.

Just one more thing to consider, as you wrote you want to play piano, but also strings, flutes etc. are faders. When playing orchestral libraries it is very important to be able to control some parameters in real time like expression, vibrato etc. I like to use faders for this, knobs don't work for me. And if you watch any videos about working with orchestral libraries, you will see that they are all using fader boxes or faders on their controllers. You still have the mod wheel, which is most of the time controlling expression in those libraries, but that's it.

Yes, good that you mention, and it is not made of 100% precious metal. To be honest, it has some plastikparts, but don't tell anyone. :knock:#*=!@##;€$#:trashing:

Hey, i've read that the Komplete Kontrol keybords have problems with mapping and transport in a lot of daws. Like the transport cannot be remapped and only a few daw's support it. Is that also the case for the octave+/- buttons?
What else should i be aware of ?
