Hi all, I'm having a major issue with my PC blue screening. I will say this has always happened here and there maybe once every few weeks but it now has become frequent and a major issue. This almost never happens unless I'm working in Ableton. I recently updated my windows 10 after probably a couple years and now it seems to be much worse. (Thanks Microsoft) This happens pretty much every hour or so and my computer starts back up quickly but nonetheless crashes. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you tried updating Ableton? Have you defragged? Disabled Max4Life? Does i happen with certain VST? If so, delete it and then try?

Have you cleaned up/ deleted prefetch folder?

Have you cleaned up the registry lately?

Have you tried working on your computer without Ableton for an hour to see if it sill crashes? Just to confirm your hypothesis?

Is anything dialling home that shouldn't be?

When you say " updated your windows 10 " do you mean you wiped the hdd and reinstalled? Or do you mean you let it Online update...

clarify that one, although I think I know the answer. People will try to help assuming you have a fresh install, and you probably do not.

It would be good to state what is your computer specs.
But one important thing you can do is to reinstall your chipset drivers.

I will try some of these. It does this very rarely usually only in ableton. What do you mean anything dialling home?

If it's bluescreen, check maybe the memories of your computer.

    .

he is asking if some software you have installed is communicating with that vendors website, to do things like kick you out/lock you out of a program. it is a copy protection tactic sometimes used. people often block this activity at their firewall, or by editing hosts file so those ip/domains cannot be communicated with.

But, I think any developer would not do something like a BSOD triggering event. Programmers have every right to kick unauthorized users from their programs; but when you start talking about forced rebooting, that is some dicey stuff for a company to do.

On your BSOD you should see a stop error code. What is it? It would also be a good idea to check your Windows event viewer and see if there's a log in there pinpointing the cause of your crash. Just simply check application logs for any errors that occurred at the time your PC BSOD'ed.

I would use another wave editor or DAW to test. it could rule out Ableton entirely. You can then rule out the plugins next by doing the copy/rename trick with the plugin folders. Then disable/swap the audio interface if that doesn't show you the problem. Reseat RAM chips next.

Yup, that is exactly what I was suggesting. Tone2 were as an example (not sure if they still are) notorious for placing code which could damage a computer inside their software.

I would try deleting the prefetch folder first by the way! then a simple reboot. It will just be rebuilt with fresh information whilst removing all outdated references.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.
If anyone has a bluescreen on his PC/Laptop and wants me to fix it,
here's what I always do fist:

    Switch the memory sticks
    - if there are 2, put the left one in the right slot and the right one in the left
    - if there's only 1, put it in another slot and try running the machine, put it back later

Reset the CMOS/BIOS settings - there are 3 ways
    - disconnect/Pull out the bios battery, wait a few minutes and put it back in
    - go to the BIOS/UEFI settings and reset everything to factory settings, restart the machine
    - use the CMOS reset jumper on your motherboard if available (located near the battery)

In 95% of the cases this always resolves that bluescreen issue like magic.
It even helps in cases where whole systems don't want to start anymore.

    And my last suggestion:
Never use Windows Update as it always makes it worse! Just install a new build/version of windows
every 2 or 3 years and you're good to go. I do it like that since the era of WinXP... and yes, you can still
turn off Updates on Win10 & 11, it just needs a little more steps.

Try to install the tool 'whocrashed'
Some minidump should have been created during the bluescreen process
That tool should help you find the culprit app.

here is an example of a report from the too:.

    Crash dump directories:
    C:\Windows
    C:\Windows\Minidump

On Sun 04/07/2021 23:36:17 your computer crashed or a problem was reported
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP
This was probably caused by the following module: intelppm.sys (intelppm+0x2D63)
    Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA800E28D028, 0xBE000000, 0x800400)
    Error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\intelppm.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: Processor Device Driver
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).
This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.
