    GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).
Gear Acquisition Syndrome, also known as GAS, is commonly understood as the musicians’ unrelenting urge to buy and own instruments and equipment as an anticipated catalyst of creative energy and bringer of happiness. For many musicians, it involves the unavoidable compulsion to spend money one does not have on gear perhaps not even needed.

write your opinion about it .....
    Are you affected by this?

The largest record collection in the world

José Roberto "Zero" Alves Freitas (born c. 1955) is a Brazilian businessman whose record collection of over eight
million discs is said to be the largest in existence. In addition, he has more than 100,000 compact discs.

Freitas has swapped candy wrappers for records. And this time he paid more attention. Today, he owns what is probably
the largest record collection in the world. Built up over decades, unnoticed by the public. Freitas collected anonymously.

It began half a century ago, Freitas, twelve years old, bought his first LP. "Roberto Carlos sings for the youth," by one of
South America's later most successful singers, Brazil's Julio Iglesias. "It was record zero," Freitas says. The founding record.

By the time he finished school, there were 3,000 records on Freitas' shelf; by the time he turned thirty and studied composition
at university: 30,000. Ten years later, he separated from his first wife - she got the books, he got the records - and collecting
became an addiction. "Five million," Freitas says he owns today. "Over the rule of thumb." New copies are added daily.

Sometimes 100,000 in one fell swoop.Zero Freitas is rebuilding, if you will, the Library of Alexandria, a universal music
repository made entirely of vinyl. No longer in the Old World, but in the New. Brazil. The discotheque of São Paulo.

two years ago I realized that three-quarters of my warez collection was no longer usable on modern operating systems.
then I fully formatted one external drive (500 GB) and deleted about 300 GB of warez from another external drive (500 GB).

total: in less than two hours, about 800 GB of warez were lost forever.

You greatly underestimate the power of 4K .png interface.
If I delete Waves, Arturia and Slate which I don't use, it would probably come down to 45-ish.

    67 GBs ???? only 67GBs :woot:
Surely some people are forgetting how many zero's they've collected.
Or have I just time-warped back to 2005?

    =========

But us GAS freaks need strategies for defence.
When my partner asks me "why do you need so many guitars? - you can only play one at a time"
I just remind her of how many pairs of knickers she has stashed away.

My first synth was a Casio MT-520 back in 1988. I was just 13 at the time but that was the beginning. Being a kid, it would be a decade before I could afford to buy any gear on my own but in 1998 I bought an Alesis QS6, a Roland SP808EX and a pair of Technics 1200's... and both my journey as a musician and as an addict really began.

At one point I worked two full time jobs just to so I could buy gear and records. A few years later I set up an online shop to buy and sell used vinyl, but as my interest in DJing declined, I eventually closed shop and just moved to buying gear. Over the course of 20+ years, I've probably bought and sold somewhere in the realm of 100k dollars worth of hardware. Add software to the mix and it's probably somewhere in the 110k range

I'm in my 40s now and buying gear has slowed down quite a bit. My set up is pretty streamlined these days, but I still buy the occasional piece and only gear I know I'll use.

I have 20Tb of storage. At least 6tbs are plugins, Kontakt libraries, soundware etc...

But I don't consider this the same as GAS. Because gas directly involved money. Also a big part of thîs are things I should delete but have no time to sort out.

I use to have gas time a go, I was unable to see my bank account with more than 2000€ and not to think about buying an effect, a bass or a guitar or a keyboard...
Now I have the gear I want, specially in the bass section and I'm calmed down.

Also I have to thank the companies that sell fragile products with bad costumers service, it helps a lot to stop GAS. Each time I want to buy something I think "another shit that's going to give problems, or they won't update the driver next year because they have something new to sell".

Even so, I have to do an effort each time I have a bit more money than the strictly needed.

I collect VSTi & VST to save you from the deletion and demise. I also think about the coming generations. I see it more as
an archive, like a library of books. It is the preservation of knowledge and products. You can also say a virtual museum.

I buy, sell, and trade like most hw synth enthusiasts. I normally only buy anything I know I can make money on, should I decide to sell it. keep the synth for awhile, do any repair/cleaning, sample it a bunch, and then move it along. I've done a lot more of it since Covid because I was working remotely for most of it.
