Any non invasive antivirus to recommend? Defender is light on the CPU but too agressive as it scans inside RAR archives and confuse R2R keygens with viruses and quarantine them instantly... No settings to restrain that behaviour...obviously...

I know why you're asking but my answer has always been to just allow/restore those items that Defender quarantines. This doesn't take long and I can continue to use what has come to be considered one of the better antivirus programs.

Previous to Windows Defender I used AVG free on every windows install, it worked great.

Good luck finding a solution that suits you.

I've used AVAST and BitDefender paid versions, I am currently on BitDefender IS as I run multiple OSs and platforms and I like it better when it came time to get a new lisc.

If I had to choose a free one though and I was on PC exclusively I would probably choose AVAST's free tier.

You are still going to have to whitelist suspect applications and use your own judgement to override scanning archives, but at least it gives you the ability to do ignore and whitelist drives and folders.

    2 possibilities
1 AVG antivirus. Disable the automatic scan. But not the on access scan. So you are still protected.
It does not look into RAR files. But once you unpack an R2R Keygen, It will always give a false positive. But it let's you the option to create an exception. Free version will, every now and then, show a pop-up saying that your computer is not completely protected, blablabla, so you buy the pay version.

2 ZoneAlarm free antivirus and firewall. It's a little bit heavier on cpu, but works very well, no false positive with R2R Keygen. Put it in manual mode and take total control of your computer security. The firewall is also very powerful and programable.

If you decide to use any of these, I can explain the best way to configure them by PM.

I've been using Bitdefender free for several years, for me it offers a good level of protection without being too annoying. You do need to create an account (email address, password) to use it, but haven't been massively spammed by them.

I use windows defender but have exclusions for every drive above C.
All my downloads go to D drive and any usb i plug in is excluded because if you plug one in with R2R type software it will start deleting files.
It will still pop up if you are installing something bad off those drives.
Haven't had a virus in over a decade but probably will get one tomorrow because I said that.

Defender is part of the Windows OS and is always there unless surgical disable/removal is done. @Odius Blot recommended what I also would have.

Copy & paste everything btween the spoiler tags into a new text document and save it as:
    Add_Windows_Defender_Firewall_to_desktop_context_menu.reg

Double-click the reg file to add it to the registry.

After restarting the system, you should now have a desktop right-click menu item named 'Windows Firewall'.

Windows Defender can be accessed quickly this way to turn on/off various settings temporarily. Here you can also set 'Exclusions' for drives, files & folders.

Just be careful and use none. I am now almost 10 years without an AV or any internet security. A few malwarebytes scans of free online ESET scans. Its just better for computer performance. And with the amount of files nowadays it will take so long to scan.

Yes, the best protection is your brain. I also turn off the Defender and use my PC without antivirus.

    Backup ... Backup ... Backup ...

Imagine you are sitting in front of the monitor and the polyphonic virus eats your files. you can really watch how one file after the other disappears. How good that I have a full backup of my hard drive C:/.Quickly the emergency disc in the drive and the complete hard drive is restored.

    I agree.

Plus, everything that is important is being copied to a cloud service.

I don't think R2R wants to slip us a Trojan or a virus.

Well in Defender you can create exemptions for files, folders and even whole drives...
It won't scan inside archives if the whole drive is exempt, or at least the folder you are working in.

I have all my drives except my OS drive listed as exempt. (Letters A-M, except "C")
I also have a bunch of folders on my OS drive ("C:\") drive exempt.

But i DO want it scanning temp files, and that is where recent R2R stuff gets caught, running in some temp location.
I forget what temp location but someplace in appdata i think.
But again, I DO want that scanned just in case i get some internet poop.
Slightly annoying, but then i just turn off realtime scanning and run the R2R again.

All of the aforementioned advice is solid.
If you decide to keep Windows Defender, make sure you choose locations to add to the exceptions:
Windows Security/Manage Settings/Add or remove exclusions
I usually add my chosen download folder and my active desktop folder (specifically my temporary "software workroom" folders).

Warning: periodically check your exclusion settings! Sometimes, updates will reset/erase your preferred settings.

Also, get in the practice of using 7zip! .... Files that are always false-positive listed are never damaged or deleted, by Defender, while they're in a 7zip archive. So, if you are accidentally scanned, again, your 7zipped false-positive (example: your R2R keygen) is safe.

My exampled use/workflow with 7zip, after download of RAR archive:
    • unpack the RAR files (with winRAR or 7zip or whatever)
    • collectively select unpacked items, then right-click save as a 7zip archive
Alternatively, you can collectively select the downloaded RAR file(s), then right-click save within a 7zip archive.

Obviously, you need to have 7zip fully installed (not the portable). I would recommend it. It's lightweight, stable, fast, powerful and automatically installs into windows shell (the right-click menu).
