Just checking out the Edirol orchestral... very nice, simple and decent sounds for sketching like you said:

Just wondering... I see all the various instruments lined up, but how do I switch between them? - I've tried switching midi channel, but only ch.1 seems to work to control the first sound, once I go above ch.2 nothing happens! Is it a bug or have a fundamentally missed something?!

It's still online on the sister site. Just search for:

and you'll find the release by ASSiGN (R2R's old name).

I remember that my settings for Edirol Orchestra never got recalled in my DAW.
Everytime it loaded up, it started at default settings. for this reason I created
little lists with the Edirol settings to be able to continue working on my projects.
... and after 3 or 4 projects I dropped that thing and used another one.

No panic... sorted! Just took a bit of figuring out in Reaper - I put the Edirol on a track then created 16 sub-folder tracks. The slightly counter-intuitive part was I seem to have to draw in some MIDI on the timeline first in order to specify what midi channel that track is transmitting on... a bit weird for my Cubase-influenced point of view!

 

just look at the top right corner and press the "System" button...
then a little window appears, choose there "file",
then "performance", then "Save"...
name your settings and save in your project folder.
Next time you open the project, repeat everything as above,
just choose "load" instead "save",then your project folder is open and you choose the settings file.
It's done.
PS.All the 16 slots could be used at the same time in 16 tracks of your DAW separately

A nice collection of "classics", I have no idea if I will ever use many of them, but have now uploaded the folder to a cloud location for "archiving" purposes.

So far, I've really enjoyed the White Noise Zero Vector (brought to my attention by earlier comments (thanks!), and adding the Synth1 presets and FM7 presets. There's a great free plugin called Krush that has a "magic touch" for beefing up these old VSTs [try the "Punch" preset] - https://www.tritik.com/product/krush/
Edirol Orchestral HQ is a really nice, low-load sketchpad when I don't need the enormity of Albion One.
The AKAI vitual sampler looked like a great tool, but unfortunately I can't get it to respond to MIDI in any way.

Found another little gem in the old trove last night... Antares Filter, a really cool filter bank with a great sound.



GUI is a bit hard to read, but would work well once set up with MIDI CC.

I know there's a whole plethora of filter plugins that do similar, if not more stuff but I like the way this is arranged, yet another great plugin gone the way of the Dodo!

the biggest problem i have with old plugins is when they crash, they crash hard.

and somebody should just reverse engineer SQ8L, update it with modern controls, preset browser, etc, and that should be good enough to keep the scene happy for a year.

 

maybe there is an opportunity to upload it all to the cloud?
