Rufus looks great. but any of them will work. it's nice if you are trying a few distros. you just don't have to hunt down the files, and also there are usually some oddball linux flavors to try out.

    balenaEtcher-Portable-1.7.3 (bootable pen drive tool)
ubuntustudio-21.10-dvd-amd64 - like I wrote works with reaper, roland quad capture and akai mpk 49.
    vst-sdk_3.7.4_build-25_2021-12-16 (VST3 tool - haven't tried it yet)

I'm glad you went with Ubuntu Studio rather than LTS. I was going to suggest it, actually.

Having many flavours of an OS is an advantage, not disadvantage. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Windows version for musicians and video editors? Pre-optimised for low latency and without all the garbage and background services and tasks you don't need?

This CrossGridder 1.4 looks very interesting, to say the least. I might give it a go. Like I said, if I could only run some Windows only VST FX and a couple of more VSTis, I would never have to use Windows ever again. :relief: :)

yo! you psychos! mac capital letter m is the way to go so elegant and shit make me fell warmly special
anyway i took those yesterday, while you may argue it's not properly registered, this is the usb stick i used to install this AVL-MX copy that also serves me as a sandbox to try something out before committing it to the system. win win situation.

It's bitwig 4.0.1 and those are latest RET and R2R Uhe synths, and Hyseq, also this old copy of traktor from
@ ElecTribe thread https://audiosex.pro/threads/trove-of-old-vsts.62644 (thanks dude)
    running on wine.

NOW, real talking, i also have a fairly decent i5 with 16GB Win7 that does not run as smooth as this bitch here (old i3 desktop with just 8GB). One or two Divas on a full blown session is enough to keep it on it's knees, yeah yeah i dont have nebula and stuff that i have on win7, but the experience is so much more smooth (i'm talking the system handling the processing here) while you fiddling parameters and dials in...

I also like Ubuntu sutdio as you guys said, but in the end AVL brings me what i use most at work so having the audio apps and the jack system ready to go for me is a plus (dont get me twisted i like the deep configuration on linux but sometimes i chose to be slack) and yes Debian based is the way to go, Debian will always be free and kept by the people not a business corporation ripower Ian.

I was hoping somebody would mention AV Linux. Thanks @Lepow ! It's a really great pre-configured for audio and video editing Debian based Linux distro. Highly recommended when you find it too hard to adjust and optimise a typical Linux distro yourself. That guy who maintains AV Linux has been doing it for a long long time. No wonder it's great. Check this link out: https://www.fossmint.com/av-linux-audio-and-video-production-os/

    Cheers! :headbang:

I hadn't used Linux in a very long time until yesterday when I booted it on USB to reset a friend's Windows password

I'm seriously thinking about switching back to it from Windows. The only thing I use it for these days audio-wise is practicing keyboards on my MIDI controller (and occasionally downloading VST's that I never use). I could certainly do that much on Linux. I don't think I would miss Windows much.

I've been using Debian with MATE DE [Gnome 2 fork] for 9 years. I started using it because I didn't want to browse with Windows - to keep it clean, lean, and safe, used only for audio production and video editing, and I've been always curious about Linux and trying a different distro every now and then since about 1996. :) However, during these 9 years, I slowly realised it can be used for audio, too. Reaper helped a lot, then u-he etc. Since I use u-he and TAL synths a lot [and I have high hopes for DSP56300 project :P], and my hardware [see my profile for info], I can use it for composing and arranging no problem.

So lately it slowly comes down to "hey, I use Windows only for mixing... hmmm" Slow transition indeed, but I'm 100% sure I'll be using only Linux for everything in a couple of years at the most, if not sooner.

I have to see how all these Windows VST bridges perform first. :tedious:

I use Kali Linux as my daily driver, this is what I use for surfing and work. I wouldn't use anything else (well maybe Parrot at a push)

My studio machine runs Windows but is isolated from the internet.

I can show you a nice way of getting a free admin account just using the Windows boot installer (USB or DVD) on any Windows machine (or changing any password)

Ubuntu 20.04 with pipewire running Ableton Suite 11,Fl studio,Reason 11 and my Daw of choice Renoise(native).I havent tested large sessions in Ableton or Reason or Fl studio but the seem to run fine especially Fl studio, but my main Daw is Renoise so i dont think i will be using the rest of them.I also have many windows vst like Sylenth1,Spire,Serum etc running with LinVst(many many other work too).Beware that if you decide to go the Linux root you will have to do a lot of manual work for things to work and you will encounter many difficulties.

Serum Synth Disable d2d1 in winecfg libraries and install gdiplus dll override (via winetricks, winetricks gdiplus). Serum can have some issues with Wines current d2d1, disable d2d1 or try a d2d1 override) (32 bit version seems to work better than the 64 bit version with a d2d1 version 6.1.7601.17514 32 bit dll override) Setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Wine Direct3D MaxVersionGL to 30002 might help but there might still be some d2d1 errors (can also depend on hardware and drivers). Serum needs Wine Staging to register.

    dll overrides
    winetricks vcrun2013
    winetricks vcrun2015
    winetricks wininet
    winetricks gdiplus
