It doesn't necessarily mean that the oversampled is better.
From my experience, I can totally hear oversampling in plugins. Up to a certain point (depends on the oversampling amount) it kinda feels more "refined"-smooth (it's one of these psychoacoustic properties that it's kinda hard to describe with words), but with Fabfilter Pro-L at least for my taste everything "dies" from 16x and above.

Oversampling is most noticeable with compressors, distortions, saturators, and most importantly - synths that don't have it. That's why it makes me so happy to have it natively implemented, because I like those effects a lot and I like synths to sound pristine - means no aliasing. If it takes a lot of CPU you just render the track, of course. If you work at 44.1/48kHz, 4x oversampling will sound a lot cleaner, especially when you know what to listen for.

Also, it's going to save me a lot of time resampling outside Reaper with Voxengo SRC implemented for imported samples that are usually 44.1kHz and I work at 48kHz. Working with real-time SRC-ed samples can eat your CPU "nicely", too.

 

I made a video from this great feature. Absolutely happy with this feature. It works somehow different than Metaplugin and offline process is cleaner than the online.

Thanks for the video, Navid Rahbar. What a beautiful difference with the oversampling.

 

There should be an option to switch on/off oversampling, for example, before final limiter (it is better to use oversampling built in limiters) or dithering. Dithering is the last step, downsampling must not be after that. So, use oversampling on mastering chain carefully.

Who tested on fft pulses? Is it linear phase?

How is PDC against non-oversampled channels or channel with different oversampling factors?

Is filter brickwally sharp?

X8 and X16 seem that added more saturation? They are just getting brighter and brighter

 

GUYS! generally speaking, oversampling is *not* the same as oversampling if you compare products that use that. When you compare oversample algorithms, it's crucial on how good (sounding) that specific downsample-filter is. This can be a FIR or IIR filter, or some custom combination. It's all about how musical it sounds.
If i have a look a ReaEQ, their filters don't really sound good to me - I clearly prefer FabFilter.

Means: internal Reaper filter algorithms are not known to provide the best-in-class sound quality, so will their downsample filters...

What a great step. Reaper did it again again (no typo). I already feel sorry for my CPU, it's gonna have some hot times.

 

So plugins with internal oversampling do not need downsampling??? Since when?

 

8x is 384kHz or 16x is 768kHz. Many plugins support up to 192kHz SR input. So it's no wonder that 8x or 16x OS leads to bad results with some plugins.
Just be careful. More is not always better.
