I am not gay but I love George Michael.
My favourite track is "Club Tropicana".
I can rape the chorus all day. It's just perfect for me.
I read somewhere that he write "Last Christmas" track in 15 minutes.
In the holiday day he just came up with an idea and quickly run to garage for keyboard and wrote melody in 15 minutes.
Great great talent. There is nothing to argue against.
But how was his secret? Technique which allowed him to create so quickly great tracks?
How he made that simple but catchy melodies?
What made it easier for him?

regarding OP :
its quite unlikely that our discussion will figure out the ellusive magic of talent.
Instead of of trying to conceptualize it, rather focus on what is exactly that inspires you in his music.
There are no 'secrets' and shortcuts to genius. At least not an articulable degree, which is not at the same time vague and moot.

 

Probably taste. I think having a genuine feel for the tracks that you create is what can make those hits. I don't think you can hit it deliberately otherwise. If you break it down to key changes and chords you lose something of the natural sound.

What you said about him running into the garage, that's just natural. I don't even think its about having a great musical understanding, like how different keys work against each other, music theory. And if it was written as a reaction to the moment, its genuine. You can't really replace that aspect.

I think you can improve your taste through experiencing a wide variety of music.

 

He could sing without autotune!

 

I too can sing without auto tune.. The difference is people pay me NOT to!

You know his biggest secret? He was one of the most generous people you could possibly know. If there was someone in trouble he would simply write a cheque and pay it anonymously. One of my DJ friends on the radio who knew him told me.

Oh yeah, he gave millions and millions to charity anonymously. Only after his death the charities disclosed it. He was a genuinely great person.
