    Thanks to our members who share their tragical stories (like this and that), i'm thinking more and more about backups.
    Like i said a few times before, I have 2TB backup drive in my Zalman ZM-MH200 U3 docking station, i used it to backup movies, sample libraries and stuff like that, but now it's full...
    of course i can buy another 2tb, 3tb, 4tb... but it will never stop + ideally we need to update drives every 5 years.

    I want to find a reliable online storage service that i could simply upload my files to, and in case of emergency get them back.

    the closest solution would be Amazon Glacier.
    You'll be paying fee for the storage, fee for uploads and a really good one if you ever need to download it back;
    in addition to that, you'll have to wait up to 2 days for Amazon to prepare your backup for download.

    Now, maybe I'd agree to pay all that, but i just hate their tricky-cheaty-smartass system with hidden fees and whole lots of other surprises. it's almost like with mobile providers - no matter what tariff you chose, in the end they'll still fuck you over.
    These things should be simple - i want to pay once a year, for real storage amount, with no hidden fees. period.

    I used to think that CrashPlan.com provides just that, but when i tried to use them, it turned out pretty pointless;
    the thing is, once you delete uploaded files from your machine, they will be removed from crashplan as well :)
    this is why so many people complain at amazon reviews that once they lost their system, they couldn't restore it from the crashplan :))
    so you basically paying for nothing...

    SkyDrive, Google Drive, Mozy etc. are too expensive... and it's the same problem with most others.

    So I wanted to ask if you know a solution to my needs, preferably something you used yourself.

    Thanks

    ZipCloud.com Review
    Yet another horrible experience. First of all because ZipCloud simply lies to their customers.
    Click the spoiler to read:

    What you see on their Price page has nothing to do with what they will charge you, and you'll never find that out before you actually pay.

    Lets take their Premium plan for example:

    http://www.zipcloud.com/plans-and-pricing
    and this is the reality that you'll see once you become a customer:

    [IMG]

    but that's not nearly the end of it *no* the very next thing you see once you pay for the chosen tariff is this:

    [IMG]

    which in other words basically means "you've been fucked".

    anyway, after all this disappointment i thought i at least get what i paid for... i was so naive.

    the Speed
    the upload speed is capped to 1.5 Mbits (my real upload speed is 30 Mbits), I'm 90% certain that download speed is none existing at all... after all, why the hell not?

    File Size
    By default, you cannot upload files larger than 5mb :))) you'll have to change that in settings;
    and in the settings you can only set maximum file size of 1GB.....

    Then somehow you won't be able to see files larger than 5GB in ZipCloud's file browser,
    while you can still attempt to upload files up to 10GB with "drag and drop", i really doubt you will succeed; not only because of the capped speed, but also because the upload process freezes about every 5 minutes.

    Subscription
    As quite expected addition (at this point), if you paid with your bank card, ZipCloud will automatically set you on a subscription. While you can cancel that with PayPal, there's no way to cancel it with bank cards unless they provide you with that option, which ZipCloud obviously didn't. they just give an email address which you can use to change or cancel your subscriptions.

    At this point I had more than enough, so i've closed the app, uninstalled it, wrote a letter to cancel my subscription and now i'm trying to find a link to cancel my account (i'm sure i saw it somewhere).

    Bottom line:
    I'm shocked by all these lies and bullshit. I'm not even sure what they do is legal. To me, this is a complete madness.

    Clearly, the time to cheaply backup your stuff to a cloud has not come yet; i've tested three Online Backup Storages to only find out that their services is basically a fraud.
    I don't have time for this so i'll stick with good old HDD's in my docking station for the next few years + I'll be using Amazon Glacier for system backup with the hope that i'll never have to actually use it, otherwise i'd be broke after paying them for the download traffic.

    Shame....... :sad:

    UPD on Amazon:
    I went back to check their prices again, and it actually not that bad now. If i understand this correctly, 1tb costs 11.264$/month.
    I think i might try it.

    some interesting information on Amazon Glacier

    In our company we have currently the same problem, but we want a much smaller space to share our new versions releases etc...

    Currently we were put and use google code storage (4Gb) but google has change politics and we have information that google code will work until 15.01.2014 and that's the end.

    Other thing is open cloud server, we were used for test 2 months for online SQL server solution, but bandwith is very bad ! It's useles in "pro" way, to give our clients etc...

    There is a problem with big companies because of changing politics every year... I don't know how about ubuntu.one storage but I personaly don't trust open source comunities because it's based on good will :) Who can garant to you 1Tb for only 10$ on month ?!???? In my google mail account there is a 15Gb of limit, but personaly I don't trust... imagine, all the people on the world who use gmail and have full inbox :)

    We use github for our source, but main accounting application has almost everyday updates so every single update is on server.

    Yes, catalyst I'm programmer, I mention that on other thread before, finance accounting software since 1996.

    remix,
    Are you using Backblaze? Will data that is uploaded to their cloud remain even if you delete it from your drives, meaning that it works different from what SAiNT found out about Crashplan?
    How is the speed for up- and downloading from their cloud, is it limited somehow or can you use the max speed that your net connection allows?

    Basicaly whatever :) I'm not language limited (principless are the same in common) from past 20 years I write code in (clipper, c, c#, pascal (delphi), python, ruby, javascript, scala, etc...), per example our main app is writen in Clipper (that was 1996), and now it's ported to Harbour-clipper project which uses clipper to c/cpp wrapper... (you can save your clipper code lines and freely build multiplatform x32/x64 app)
