Batteries are about to have a major breakthrough. One company in China is in full production with a battery that can be 80% charged in 5 minutes and in the USA there is a battery under development that lasts way longer, can be charged in 5 minutes and does not need to be water cooled.

I just would not buy a electric car now

Does the future look like this ? Self-driving taxis and buses and the rails!

    A completely different question:
Is there any technical reason why you should not be able to convert an existing vehicle into an electric car.
I drive an Audi A8 diesel. If you look in the engine compartment, there's room for a big electric motor and a few big batteries if you remove the 8-cylinder diesel engine and the transmission. It feels like two cubic meters. Plus a really huge trunk that could partly used for batteries. Isn't it possible just to connect the electric motor to the drive train?
I'd hate to throw away a great car just to drive electrically.

I'm waiting for the first Bitcoin car. Of course it will need a Gigafactory on a trailer to power it but I'll be able to mine bitcoins as I go so essentially free energy (for me). Get rich going to work.

There are some who convert cars into electric. I would def see this conversion business as a new way to make jobs and/or a new industry.

    Welcome to Electric Classic Cars
EV Conversion Kits, EV West - Electric Vehicle Parts, Components, EVSE Charging Stations, Electric Car Conversion Kits
    etc

    it's already being done.

There is an entire business niche of electro-mod conversions. Mostly classics but if the client has the money it can be done to anything.

I personally would love self driving cars and I consider myself a sporting driver. I can take my driving on to the track and enjoy naps in my car.

We have horses in the backyard, I don't ride them on the street either because too many drivers around here have no idea that people, bicycles and horses have the right of way (in that order.) Maybe when autonomous cars take over I can stop trailering my horses everywhere and ride them to the grocery store for kicks. What an anachronism that would be :)

every one of those internal combustion->electric conversions I have seen has also had all the drive line components replaced, too. transmission, brakes, etc. it gets very expensive; prohibitively so for most regular cars. No-one is going to spend 30 grand to convert a car they can sell for 10.

    Yes, that's clear.

However, governments here in Europe are so hell-bent on introducing electric vehicles that some are providing incredible assistance in the form of taxes or grants.
From the point of view that the transition should serve the environment, scrapping the current fleet and building new similarly powerful and luxurious vehicles would be incredibly stupid.
The better alternative would be to renew the fleet, at least of vehicles used for business purposes, which are usually between 0 and 4 years old.
If this form of transition were pursued, prices for such conversions could also drop dramatically due to mass production of conversion kits.
However, I fear that the automotive industry has little interest in this and therefore they hold the prices for the conversion of vehicles artificially high. Because the money would be earned more by the small workshops who'll do the conversion workmanship.

Unfortunately, politics at the end usually does what industry and lobbyists whisper to them.

This Finnish guys bought a used Tesla, only drove it for 1500km then it failed and they said he would have had to replace the whole battery system for 20000 euro. So he decided to just blow it up with dynamite instead

Here is the economical variant. Protects the environment and is tax-free.

It's true that Tesla are a bit too much like Apple in this regards,
like they want to have Control of everything, and so it's a very Closed and Restrictive system..

Arguably it makes kinda sense, because vehicles are potentially Dangerous things,
if the car gets on Fire and kills the driver, or if goes Berserk and gets into Carmageddon mode...
well it's very bad press for the company lol

But I wonder If he could have done like that Rich Rebuilds guy,
yes that one who rebuilds his own teslas from other damaged/ruined teslas..
(take a look at him because he's showing the real stuff,
he re-built a few teslas by hand, part by part and explained the whole process..
but now apparently he's moved-on from the brand..)

I mean, they could have bought a ruined tesla for less than 20K and reuse the batteries..
Or why not, maybe buy a lot of those Phillips battery cells (or even just any brand cells), and fix/replace the faulty modules.. :dunno:

Still, the Explosion was well worth it..
We can always learn something new.. lol

My only grief is the Forest,
I mean, now there's gonna be Tesla parts in a 5km radius..

Although if some of those pieces get to Orbit,
and fucks/crashes some Starlink satellite, or a SpaceX rocket it's an added value..

You can stockpile gas. You can't stockpile electricity. Hurricane or other disaster area for 10+ miles in each direction? No electricity in sight; emergency and supply vehicles fk'ed. The Govt wants total control to keep people from driving? No electricity for you. etc...

    Hell, no!

Why: I need a car that can drive further than 300 miles without needing to be recharged. Also, the lack of effective recharging facilities.

I'd take a Tesla if someone gave me one for free. But I wouldn't even buy a Prius if I had to spend my own money on it.

Exactly, glad some of us still use our brains. When an EMP goes off, which will render all electronics useless then only that corn farm is still going to have a broke down truck you could potentially fix if you knew how to fix vehicles that don't catch a charge like their now defunct cellphone.

If you say some shit online that Putin doesn't receive as hairy ass cunnilingus then your credit score goes down and you become a useless citizen as the rest of your resources are limited. People are so quick to trade freedom for convenience until it's too late cause history could only repeat itself.
