    Hello friends,

I needed to validate functionality of my hackintosh recently (long story short, I did some adjustments, and it seems kernel power management with dynamic CPU frequency clock changes works properly), so I was advised by friend a good way would be to try Logic Pro X benchmark,
    provided here: https://music-prod.com/logic-pro-x-benchmarks/

I was able to achieve 95 tracks playing on my 4.3GHz OC'ed i7-5820K, Logic 10.4.8, High Sierra 10.13.6
for comparison, the website mentions for example:

    6-core MacMini i7-8700B scoring 91 and
    8-core MacBook Pro 16 i9-9880H scoring 99
    new MacMini M1 scoring 109

can anyone else here try the benchmark, so I can consider it usably reliable indication of performance?
    thanks in advance

    :chilling:

There are 3 test on that website, which one did you use?

Benchmarks are mostly used to find the breaking point of your system/setup. It could be better to use sessions or, create a session from scratch that is setup the way you actually use the software. Once you have a mix with effects on channel/subs that require them, add you mix bus effects chain one-by-one & while keeping track of system load in Logic or , Activity monitor.

From there you can either start to double up tracks, replace light load mix bus effects with heavy load ones, add more reverb/delays busses for each sub group or track. All while still tracking resource & system load.

This is how I know where my systems break point is relative to how it is used in heavy workload situations.

    Hope that helps.

I believe that's what that particular Logic benchmark actually does
I'm using Reaper and I haven't ran out of resources yet with my workflows, but since it's relatively lightweight DAW and I don't produce complex projects (yet) I felt it would be more indicative to grab some proven benchmark first

on a side note, I had this idea in mind since I saw some YT video showing Apple M1 performance in Logic Pro X through Rosetta, where they were able to run "only" 6 instances of resource-heavy Waves Abbey Road Plates (Stereo) while I could smack 48 of them barely peaking 90% cpu use in Reaper, without any hiccups..

I have used and, also created my own custom benchmarks for Pro Tools & Reaper. The one for PT uses only stock plugins. Did two variants for Reaper. One stock & one mixed.

From there I decided to start using sessions/projects that I actually work on while adding or replacing effects. Once 60% peak usage is reached mix bus FX are added until 90% max is reached. The extra 10% is reserved for Stereo bounce/render.

Last Time I checked: about 180 Tracks on my i9 10850K Hackintosh, no Overclock.

43 on my Lenovo T530 Hackintosh from 2012/2013 with an i7 3630QM. So my 9 year old Laptop basically burns a 2014 iMac and MacBookPro with ease. ;)

Barely 32 Tracks on my i5-6600k Hackintosh Big Sur.
I've tried this test on different versions throughout the lifetime of my hack, and it was always that low. Something seems quite fishy
when my i5-4750 with only 8gb ram can achieve the same kind of performance.

That's definitely too few. I can tell, because until August, I had an i7 6700k and a Z170 Board and could open about 60 to 70 tracks if I recall correctly. But with an Audio Interface of course. Which Bootloader are you using? Clover? I suggest OpenCore.

There's a Tool called OC Gen X which lets you create a basic EFI Folder for your Skylake CPU with Drivers, Kexts and a Config. You still have to add some SSDTs and edit/tweak the config. But with the Dortania OpenCore Install Guide it's relatively easy.

You should also create a custom ssdt-plug using ssdtprgen so your cpu has wirking speedstep an turbos to the max frequency correctly. You can monitor this using intel power gadget.

Logic 10.7.2 on Big Sur running on Ryzen 5 3600X Hackintosh.

I've managed to run 108 tracks looped three times.

Mid 2015 15" with the i7 4980HQ (the made to order one)

30 tracks looped 15 times on any buffer size starting from 64. Increasing it to the maximum of 1024 nets me 3 whole degrees C less (tops out at 95°C on 64 samples) and 3% less CPU usage. 7 threads stay at ~77% usage, 1 thread is permanently at ~7% during playback. (on 64)

Seems a bit.. low. It can't do 31 tracks on 1024, 30 is the hard limit.

using native logic effects it is not a good comparison.. using third party effecs is a good comparison.

why would it not be good comparison as long as you compare apples with apples? we are comparing computers running the same software.

or what else would you suggest?
