What caused the extensions to change from a .dll to .R2R, all of a sudden, overnight?

Anyone have the same thing happen?

 

What do you mean?
If you talk about files is Program Files\Common Files\Plugin Alliance\VST2 - they have always been with .R2R extension
Files in Program Files\VstPlugins\Plugin Alliance (or wherever you installed VST plugins itself) should have .DLL extension

My; Program Files/VSTplugins/Plugin Alliance path. All these files always have been .dll
The extensions have changed and not by me doing so.

 

I opened up a saved project with a couple a PA plugs in it, the DAW (flSTUDIO)saying the plugins are unable to load.

I don't have said directory. Never had.

 

If you talk about R2R release and plugins works for you previously, you should have specified directory.
DLL files in R2R release are just wrappers which loads related R2R file from Common Files\Plugin Alliance\VST2 (this path is hardcoded in wrapper DLL code)
Maybe something mess files on your PC, and i think you can try to reinstall plugins
You can also check size of R2R files: DLL files should have size around ~4kb, but most R2R files should be >10mb in size
