    It's the end of 2013 !

I'm using winamp as audio (mp3, flac) player. Winamp, even if it's in version 5, it's software since 90's (windows 95,98 era). So nothing new, nothing impressive.

I'm wondering, why in year 2013 I can't find nice audio player with fine integrated output control ( limiter, multiband dynamics, reverb ) etc...
without media library, freedb.org, shoutcast and that kind of craps etc.. etc... just fine tiny application with playlist possibilities (5Mb).

Situation on macosx is worst !

Yes, we have iTunes - blahhhhh ! I just hate iTunes ! MediaMonkey - blahhhhh... the whole key point of these applications is media library.

So, question is, why there is no good software these days or something new (in the desktop area). We still use software from 90's.

If you look at DAW software and plugins, software gui's and possibilities goes to space these days !

I use DFX audio enhancer which is a definite plus in improving the sound quality and is better than the built in fx with most players

I use Foobar with a user-made skin. It has VST support, you could use your favorite plugs if you want (not natively, but there are some plugins for that purpose, e.g. here or here).

iTunes has killed most of the other developements I guess - like Apple killed the Mp3-Player-Market with the iPod. I have an iPod, but
without Cuesheet-Suport this thing just sucks...

But the kiddies these days, they don't care, they listen to shitty music on smartphones and tablets and smarttvs, no need for a hq-player any more.

I know, I use jammix dsp plugin for winamp... but you know what's the point of my post...

When Winamp came (199x) that was revolution... now it's 2013 and there is no audio player for example like NI Tractor with one deck and no need for scanning files into library etc...

Just lightweight application with playlist (drag and drop files from explorer) and set output modules by your choice (add compresor, limiter, little reverb for ambience etc...)

I love Winamp, too bad they're retiring it. :(

AIMP and foobar are good alternatives.

I will try fb for sure.

I'm trying it before 10 years, but in that time winamp just was a better solution

Maybe because you were not looking hard enough, or at the wrong places?

    JRiver Media Center
    http://www.jriver.com/

I am using this program for way more than 10 years now.
(First it was Media Jukebox, then it became Media Center).
It can play all sorts of video files too, but I use it mainly for music.

It can load VST plug-ins (!) and works great with ASIO drivers.
Recently (1-2 years ago) they also released a version for Mac.

The newest version (v19) even has an integrated loudness and dynamic range analyser, adopting the R128 industry standard. :wow:
So you can have a look at the dynamic range of the music you listen to, without having to load it into your DAW (or level the loudness of your music collection).

    Fantastic piece of software.

Here is a great, very in-depth review of it (version 17):

I play fb2000 right now... it's great, I use dark theme from DokX suggestion it's great too... But, before setup theme I must read manual :) It's complicated too.

I download vst dll component, work's great.

I use T-RackS 4 with "regular #1" preset and work and sound great, I'm not having issues with buffer etc... like in winamp's vst wrapper.

Bad thing about vst dll, you must restart fb2000 after adding some plugin.

The answer to your question is simple: because you were using Winamp and not Foobar2000.

You can have DSP plugins, even VST with 3rd party DSP plugin on the output, ASIO, very fine volume control, limiter, replaygain, R128 gain... it's a real musician's music player. You can convert any audio to any audio, even record audio CDs with it.

I never have to restart after adding VST plugin. There must be some problem with your configuration Nikon. I use Foobar v1.1.18. It's always a good idea to stay a little behind, using an older and stable version with any software and Foobar is not an exception. Maybe the problem is v1.2 or even 1.3 beta if you're using those?

On OSX I use Cog. It's fast to start, fast to use, does playlists, and never insists on being a dictator to your entire media library. It just works.

    http://cogx.org/

It may look like it has been abandoned, but there are still updates occurring occasionally. It just doesn't need to be updated every other week, unlike alternatives which have thousands of ugly bugs in hundreds of clunky unneeded features. (Screw you, iTunes.)

    Most recent nightly build: http://cogx.org/development.php

No VST processing support, though. :( You could use SoundFlower or JACK to pipe audio into a VST host for that.

As I said, I use it only for audio.

What does it harm if it can do more?
