Since it is offline it will work for current programs... But for future updates after January 1st. they will not work on a new licensing system...

Notice the difference in the way they treat their customers.

VSL: eLicenser is gonna go, let's migrate your licenses to iLok.
reFX: elicenser is gonna go, so is you ability to activate and manage your license in the future, tough luck! Buy our new version!

Not saying VSL isn't treating their customers badly too, but this is just very obvious here.

So guys, did I get it wrong or will the whole eLicenser protection scheme be dismantled?

    Dear customers,

For many of you this is the announcement you have been waiting for a long time. While we put our heart and soul into developing ground-breaking products in your best interests, we haven’t accomplished our promise to provide you with the user experience you deserve in every part of Steinberg’s technologies in recent time.

We have been listening to your feedback for years, but significant changes need time, and we had to carefully lay out our vision for the future. But now the time has come to put our approach to license management at the center of our attention.

We have decided to adopt a new license management technology that everyone will benefit from to prepare for coming requirements.

An authorization system shouldn’t get in your way, but support you in the onboarding process.
Anti-piracy protection technology shouldn’t restrict you as the customer, but secure your investment.
A license management shouldn’t stop you from using your products, but enable you to be creative, whenever and wherever you are.

At this point in time, all we can tell you is that everyone at Steinberg is strongly committed to providing you as soon as possible with a solution that offers more flexibility, more reliability and, of course, a seamless migration.

It’s too early to announce details on the schedule or the new environment, but one thing is for sure: The future will be dongle-free.

    The Steinberg Team

If they will use a less intrusive scheme perhaps like Plugin Alliance, without being perpetually online, from 2022 I will consider buying Cubase.

As always, it's about the cost and whether you can win the race against the crackers.

The reality: Nothing is as simple as it looks!
At first glance, the scenario described appears to be problem-free. But what does the reality look like? The first problem: Only if the developers engage in a long-term competition with the cracker scene do you have a lasting chance against piracy: because every system, no matter how well thought out, becomes vulnerable and worthless after a while.

Second, all the details should be considered: It's not just about licensing, but also about protecting the code from imitation, about copy protection or flexible licensing models. All of this increases sales and support costs. Then there is version management, license updates (or downgrades) or even moving licenses from one PC to another.

Can you provide a system that automatically manages this so that no employee has to intervene manually every time? Do you know that some software activation with an unstable hardware environment is a real challenge? Have you thought about which license models your sales department would like to use to increase sales: Unlimited license, subscription, rental, free trial version, network licenses, usage counter, temporary transfer of licenses etc.? Do you realize that you need to keep a record of all transactions around your licensing process?

And at the end the clear question from the management:
Can you make sure that all software used has been paid for correctly?
Even if you have a smart development team that is perfectly trained, there will of course be expenses for your own solution.

Using developers elsewhere or even hiring new ones causes real costs.
During this time, these developers cannot work on the software that is really your core business. And even then you still don't have any developers like the ones at Wibu-Systems, whose core business is secure software licensing. Their "professional solution" supports all important platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux and even more) with backward compatibility, with knowledge of cryptography and reengineering, integration points, etc.

Ok. good! I hope Cubase does not need to be online 24/7 or a monthly subscription model.

If only there weren't always these updates.
Software manufacturers have been tormenting us with their new cloud business models and rental offers since 2020. Microsoft is annoying with its forced updates and the @ArcticStorm it did not get an offline installer for its mainboard.

The next problem is already there: Windows 10: Attention, driver signing changes in 2021, cross-signed drivers no longer usable https://borncity.com/win/2021/01/07...ert-sich-2021-alt-treiber-nicht-mehr-nutzbar/
