Even some spiders, who have only a metameric nervous system, are able to plan more or less complex strategic actions. Just like Portia:

Just by the way, i love the sound design in this documentary

Thanks @Sinus Well, for your views and insights.

The biochemistry of the brain: Supposedly, our feelings control amino acids, they are supposed to be responsible for 200 emotional states, the neurotransmitters (hormones) such as dopamine, dopamine is responsible for the feeling of happiness, so one tries to get dopamine discharges in order to be able to experience feelings of happiness. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are released in threatening life situations.
I have a pigeon that comes to me every day to eat.

One day she had nothing more to eat and then she furiously attacked the tits' feed container so that it was down. Since then I have known that she also has other feelings and she is probably more like humans than we think. I gave her food again and she brought me a branch, probably as thanks for the food.

The squirrel had dug up all my crops and ruined my harvest. If I have hazelnuts or walnuts, the squirrel is happy and makes noises and dances on its hind legs, I would interpret that as an expression of joy. Since the squirrel doesn't have facial expressions.

I just marvel at what creatures can do. What we do know about brains is awesome; but what we don't know is infinite.

    e.g., Dragon flies

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5XUdvBO_TE
They've been around since before dinosaurs.
They see up to 200 frames per second (we do about 60)
They catch prey by anticipating the flight path (like a player runs to where a ball is going to be)
Probably a safe bet to assume it hasn't got an inner monologue to direct its planning
(other than maybe "yummy a midge") :winker:

and then there's the show off big brains
Crow Solves An 8 Step Puzzle To Get Food

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gui3IswQ0DI
Should make us less confident that planning requires language.

    ---
UPDATE EDIT: @Sinus Well your spider's immaculate planning didn't last forever.
I found the movies of what happened after Portia's career took a nose dive...

My brain has this tendency to generate Music on its own, in the strangest foking styles..

Like instead of generating a proper Classical/Acoustic Guitar piece, or a Rock/Fusion track that I can write down/produce.. (something useful)
it will randomly generate Disco Funk songs alla Bonny M.. lol

    And I'm like.. Dude!
Stop funking me, it's not the right moment,
and I have literally no use for a Disco funk track, or the means to produce it..
like where do I get a Brass Ensemble and a Black Choir? lol

It also happens to me with Flamenco, and Orchestral stuff.. or even with Balkan 7/8 stuff..
It will randomly generate stuff, and I have to stop it and try to focus on what I really wanted/had to think about atm..

And it's dangerous because only thinking about the idea/style it could happen..
like saying "Satriani", and it just comes.. but then what?

Do I have to leave everything I'm doing, and focus on writing that down?
I may have lost hundreds of good musical ideas like that, but I just have no use for them most of the time..

Good thing is I can kinda take control, and use the ability to generate any type of music..
I just think of the concept/style, and it comes.. so I can compose music based on that.

Or I can just go more empirically/playing, or analytically/using theory/harmony..

    -As for the inner Voices,
I think we all got many voices/moods dependin on what's the topic/attitude of the moment..

    Plain normal speaking voice,
    in different languajes (+5),
child voice (at various ages), reckless teenager voice,
kidding/joking voices (with a few variations),
epic/medieval knight voice, old man voice, smeagolish voice..
drunkster/junky voice, chav style or retro 90's,
angry voice, evil voice, sad voice..

    And then imitation voices/personalities,
like the Andalusian or Galician voice in me, Portugese/Brazilian, the French voice, Italiano..
the Argentinian voice, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican.. (I know a lot of Chilean vocab, but the accent is unimitable..)
the British voice (chav version, drunk version, serious/technical/linguist version..),
or even a Hindu voice/accent, or a Chinese voice even tho I know like 4 words.. lol

I usually just think with my Regular inner voice,
but I can choose any of those voices for mere Entertainment.. maybe one day I can Cook with Galician or French voice/persona,
and then I can internally Complain about something with the Argentinian or Italian voice/persona.. (more adequate/fun)

And so on/forth.. all pretty normal I guess,
and no problem as long as You are in Control I guess.. lol

Crows are quite intelligent, but have - as far as I know - a rather limited vocabulary. This is in contrast to ravens, which have quite a considerable vocabulary and are able to imitate human vocabulary and sentences in great detail. And I really mean in great detail! They can imitate both voice and accent.

But language does not only mean being able to form human words. There are also facial expressions and gestures. Virtually all animals and even most insects have at least a simple body language. Cats, for example, have very complex facial expressions through which they communicate. In fact, they're so complex and often subtle that we humans can't even perceive many of these subtle facial expressions. And with most cats I can read nothing or only very little from the face.

But one of my cats has very strong facial expressions and I can usually tell what she wants from me just by the way she looks at me. And if I don't notice it or ignore it, she draws attention to herself by meowing. Just from the color of her voice, the way she meows and the emphasis she gives to her voice, I usually know what she wants. And these can be very different things. For example, she not only tells me that she is hungry, she even tells me WHAT she wants to eat. But the communication goes far beyond the need to eat. So, if you ask me, they do use language. The question is whether you understand this language or not. And in this particular case, I understand her language.

I know one hundred percent what you mean! Happens to me often. Often in completely inappropriate moments, like during a conversation or at a funeral (seriously).
But if the situation allows it, I skat the stuff in my smartphone. That way I can use it later.

Ikr.. and it also tends to go in a Loop,
like say a Chorus section that repeats continuously, but with little variations,
like a different melodic ending, or drum fills/decorations..

We musicians are an odd bunch.. lol

Fully in accord with @Ŧยχøя and @Sinus Well about how composition is hugely infected with just discovering (without embarrassment) musical bizarreness happening in our brains - out of the blue - not even slightly consciously controlled. These are our most precious inner monologues - in all their good, bad, and ugly (and occassionally beautiful) incarnations.

    ===

Agreed, ravens are great too. I have many magpies that patrol my garden and rooftop. They are truly amazing vocalists.
I recorded them once to slow it down and listen more carefully.
Their microtonality is utterly baffling and it is definitely a communicative language.

But are ravens or magpies cool enough get the gig compared to these guys?
Have they got that rhythmic magic too?

When people say "I heard it in my head" when they write. It's a very real thing.
Contrary to popular opinion, it's not always someone else's tune they hear.

I think its pretty random and fast for our brain to create a brand new melody actually. Forcing one out is useless, doesn't work

And so many other problems associated from this issue like uncontrollable farting, retardation, halitosis, incessant belching, drooling like an idiot and constant non stop imbecilic rantings. So all you have to do to cure this is get a job and you'll be too tired to talk to yourself.

The voice in my head is afraid of the voice in its own head so shuts the fuck up so as not to be riddled with fear.
