I've to been using Glasswire for the last couple of months...
NOTE - Make sure you disconnect from the net before running it for the first time and block it from updating, or you'll see an update nag.

I was using Comodo for years prior to this, however it would often flag and block false positives even when disabling for 5 mins to install an application, after which one must follow a tedious and convoluted process to restore the blocked files... maybe it's user error and i'm missing something in Comodo, I was using the free version and the upgrade to pro popups were also getting really annoying!

    Anyway...

Glasswire is doing it for me, it's way nicer to use and utilising minimal system resources compared to some firewall/anti virus applications!!

So you do not know how to set firewall in Windows? If you want a GUI that tells you and auto-applies it on the fly in the firewall this is not it as I stated earlier. If you want something that tells you everything you need to block at microscope level which everything mentioned here won't, it does. The only difference is you have to know what to block and how, which I also pretty much said earlier. Some people even have a massive hosts file on loopback as their firewall. Most people want a GUI. GUI-based auto-fixers rarely cover everything that needs to be covered. Wireshark will also show the vulnerable areas which many of the GUI's do not.

and thats my point, wireshark shows all, but blocks nothing.
i use the default windows firewall, without add-on guis. but thats not what the threadstarter wants, why should i mention it?
    he looks for:
    "a proper network filter will
    - close everything
    - automatically open up a window for every outgoing task
    - and wait for you to approve the task or save a setting for this app and/or adress before the task is allowed or blocked
i am sure there is something for windows, too, but i have no idea searching on my own."
wether wireshark nor the built-in windows firewall fit the bill.
on second thought... the windows firewall is at least able to block something, but wireshark?

I did say if you know how to.... in the first post.
You can write one file and save it which is what the GUI does basically. Manually of course it takes longer but it is definitely more accurate unless typing sucks (we all make mistakes occasionally). .. That said, combining the two is probably the best option because you can add the ones the GUI won't pick up :)
