Do I really need a channel strip (emulation) in my mixes?

Almost every DAW has a "channel strip" included. It is most often clean and can create a great mix. How often do you think they run a modern symphony recording through saturation? I would say it would be low unless it is for a movie that wants saturation to make the mix pop. This is especially true of hybrid mixes that include edgy synth parts. This is just an example but you decide. Also, the channel provided by the DAW might have some downsides just like any plugins. That is why some only use the processing needed per track. Don't just insert it... or other cases where it is interesting to start with a signature sound that could be a console emulation. Use taste, learn your craft, try it all in practice, and choose.

at the end of the day, none of this is about plugins.

it's about your ears and what you hear.

if any plugin, regardless of what it is, sounds better to your ears in any mix, use ... if not, don't.

to the person asking about the best analogue colouration .... if that's important to you ... get an analogue system. those tend to be the best ;)

It's like painting with sound, that's how I see it as a former art student.

I came of age as a guitarist in the 80s and was surrounded by the whole 80's guitarist thing where it's all about chucking in 2 million notes where one would be perfect. That was what you thought you had to do back then if you were stupid like me. Nowadays, I'm a Beatles level tunesmith, and a guitarist. My advice for guitarists out there is be yourself. Stop being a cliche. Stop wearing a uniform that's 40 years old and using someone else's idea of equipment. Stop trying to play as fast as you can and start playing as musically as you can and channeling your own musical soul!

One day you will thank me for this advice.

So, you know that they color your mix "especially if it's SSL" which lol, no.
But anyways, you can always just add saturation manually after using a clean EQ, channel strip plugins would be obsolete if it wasn't for a good bunch of people who don't like to go the manual two steps i have mentioned and use a single plugin instead, which is fine too.

    Bad comparison.
Distortion adds harmonics which would technically make their mistakes even more audible, autotune on the other hand is designed to correct your mistakes
