I'm talking about the one on the thumbnail, it appears in the video too. It looks so much like hardware, almost got me fooled. I would love to buy one for my home studio so I can get analog sound like this.

What is a mastering compressor? Is it for master level musicians?

 

This one is really good on the master but also on Drums. On the site you have also some examples if you use it on Vocals and other stuff.
But yeah this one has 2 compressors in it (the Optical and Discrete).

And btw the original one is Hardware

Mastering is the art of raising the level. To quote Ghandi, "a mastering compressor is basicaly a glorified fader and ya'll are just too affraid to admit it". Anyone who says otherwise is in denial, a study says.

Yeah. Sounds about right. I have both and always prefer the UAD version. It has more depth to me. I'll use the PA version when I'm on my laptop setup BC I don't have access to my UAD Plugs but when I get back home, I'll swap it out for the UA version.

i got complimented once on a final mixdown of a song, guy said great distortion, level is nice and loud and nice compression. told him it was just my machinedrum on my spirit m12 mixer with the gain all the way up, no distortion and no compressor used XD

A compressor is for the lead singer in the band to compress, shrink the band and equipment to between 2 and 40 times their actual size enabling him or her to travel to gigs on the cheap. Upon arrival the singer uses upward compression to return them to their previous size in order to play the gig, and then re-compresses them for the way home. The hardware works best as it is an all analog signal path. The current compression technology in software adds unwanted artifacts that can have disadvantageous effects such as asking for a fair share of the cut in band equity from paying gigs and insisting that the vocalist show up in time to rehearsals.
