I ran the test again, only with S1 and reaper and the funny thing is that when S1 CPU meter reaches 90% and audio start crackling, windows CPU meter is just above 30%....with reaper it is at about 40....any one can tell me why? thx

That is the same thing that happens with FL Studio too. It will max out it's internal CPU meter while the machine processor is only reading 30%.

Lots of headroom on the computer, but FL is maxed and sputtering like crazy. Happens with heavy plugin usage.

Reaper seems to have the same headroom that the computer has. Runs many, many more plugins.

The difference is very obvious and noticeable!

I don't know about all the other DAWs, It would be interesting to see how the others stack up against Reaper's CPU usage.
Theoretically the DAW that runs the most plugins should be the one to inhibit your creativity the least.

More plugins = more creativity = more inspiration.

i'm glad to hear that, and to see that S1 is not the only "cripple-ware"...but do you have any clue as to why this happens?? I would understand that a CPU be spared and left for the OS but there is still plenty of room

I tried in sonar again and after 36 midi track to multi patches omnisphere/trillian etc...i began to hear a few pops and crackle here and there ..but tolerable...at 56 midi tracks the CPU meter is at 50% or so (the same as windows CPU roughly speaking) but the audio engine is reaching its ceiling...no drop outs but more pops/crackles...kinda irksome!

reaper's audio engine clearly handle a lot more (I didnt see the end actually!)...but the workflow is definitely not my cup of tea...

The difference must be in how the software uses the multi-core processors.

I Create and produce in one DAW then export stems to another DAW for mixing.

My preference now is FL studio producing, and Reaper for mixing & mastering.

I find it also helps my workflow doing this . I am no longer tempted to tweak musical parts while mixing.

Just like working from my studio experience. Cut tracks one day, Mix on another day.
    Good luck

yes but still...the CPU meter in sonar is just at 50% when audio starts to crackle...so that's weird...I would understand if like in S1 or FL it was at 100%....but thats not the case..so what are we to make of that?

if someone has an inkling as to why this happens thanks to share it here
