chords from melody...any fast way?

Discussion in 'Software' started by samsome, Oct 2, 2021.

  1. I made a terrible mistake and subsequently I have made myself look foolish. I thought you were seriously asking for help with how to play a keyboard.
These are the kind of things that make me regularly ponder why I remain a member here.

I want to help OP find a better way to harmonize beside some fast ways. Please don't make this discussion emotional. Ad Heesive has nothing to help OP and loves jeering. Leave him alone.

Using white keys is a good suggestion. But shouldn't there be any criteria for using them?

  4. All the criteria you need to make almost any track is in my suggested method of creating triads with those three fingers. With just the white keys you can compose evocative melodies with the use of the chords, Cmajor, Dm, Em, Fmajor, Gmajor, Am, Bdim. It doesn't get any more basic than this, yet some of the greatest melodies of all time, and I mean ALL time can work with these chords. Beethovens 9th was criticised at the for being too childish because it was such a simple composition.
So stop typing and go and learn!

Summarising Lenny's advice - it seems to be something like...
"Start off by staying in one simple key and then just explore your own musical brain - get good at just being musical"

Can this informal approach really work? :dunno:

    Irving Berlin (from wiki)
For much of his career Berlin could not read sheet music, and was such a limited piano player that he could only play in the key of F-sharp using his custom piano equipped with a transposing lever. He wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him famous before he turned thirty. During his 60-year career he wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films, with his songs nominated eight times for Academy Awards.

Apparently Lenny's method seems to be more than adequate.

Now we could have a seriously fruitful argument over the ultra informal 'white keys versus black keys'
Lenny's white keys would probably win for harmony.
For melody though, Berlin's mostly black keys might give Lenny a run for his money.
but all this would sail over the Riviera like an escaped hot air balloon.

This whole thread is nonsense, all you need is a mixing desk and a cool dj name...

All you need is to pay other people to figure it out for you. If you pay Jacob Collier enough (or if you ask him on a Q&A session or whatever) he would probably harmonize every chord in the universe out of a single note.

First, you should fix a target, what do you want to play? Classical, edm, hip hop, country?
    At which level / skill?

I can't understand all this long talk, it's easy, go yt and search "piano for beginners".
Thousands of courses, many completely free, choose one and see if you can get something.
Example: yt channel "Piano Lessons On The Web".

No need to call in philosophy or abstract terms, this is the internet and informations can be shared easily, sometimes too much.

    Exactly @orbitbooster, you got it.

Almost everyone on this globe, with the exception of talented geniuses, first undertakes vocational training and / or studies a subject. Then he gathers professional experience and with a little talent and luck, he becomes a good, successful musician.
On the other hand, there are also talents who can't find a job because the market doesn't have it.

I advocate buying specialist books and / or doing an apprenticeship. Better to analyze the internet as a medium and what the digital media do with your brain. Note: Many are only interested in self-expression on the World Wide Web.

99% of the music that's available now (in all genres), they're all 7-note music. To work with these seven notes, just close your eyes and let your inside guide you inspirationally. Most of that 99%, use this method. In that case, even these questions won't matter to you. It's the best and easiest way.

Right. But if someone asks for easy (and lazy) shortcuts during the internet age, I guess books are a bit under the horizon.

A famous photographer was once asked what he thought of the many photos on the Internet.
He replies 95% is rubbish. It's the same with music.

So that means 79 of the 88 keys on my piano are crap.
Why couldn't they just label the crap ones and make my writing easier. :guru:

I assume Riviera will now sue me for stealing his logic. :bleh:

    I didn't say crap. I just said 7-note music.

I love this kind of music myself, and the best melodies have been made with these 7 notes, but at least we have to respect them and not treat them as we like. We have to keep their dignity.

Buying books does not help much if you didn't get the main principles. It's like with mathmatics: if you didn't get the basics you won't never be able to do the calculus.
Therefore, the second half-sentence is much more important: Get training. At least for the basics and then - practice, practice, practice... Preferably with an instrument until you master it well.*
And then buy some good books to dig deeper.

Of course, born musicial artists don't need all that. But there is only one of them among 100 millions.
And there is probably none of us among them.

Each of us here attended elementary school for 4 years and is therefore able to do arithmetic. Schooling is compulsory here in Europe. So 4 years of music lessons for everyone. Rappers then have to take singing lessons for 4 years. I'm sure we'll get better music then. Unfortunately, the reality is different, many cannot concentrate, others have too low an IQ and in turn others are looking for an outlet to get rid of their hatred. Education helps ...!
