For audio/video production, one will have to use Windows 11 Pro or better while also disabling so far, undetermined resources for smooth performance. Chris Titus is already working on features for his tweak utility for Windows 11.

I would wait/hold off for a year or so. Hopefully by then, an optimization guide for the audio/video community will have been created

The gaming community is reporting serious performance issues with the initial release of Windows 11.

I am personally preparing to jump over to Linux completely using AV Linux. Software will be Reaper & Bitwig. Still have a MacBook Air for Logic Pro. Goodbye Pro Tools...

This is very wrong, as TPM (such as this) is a chip that you can add to your motherboard, many have the option to do so, and some even have software tpm built-in the motherboard itself, check your motherboards model's manual to see if yours have the needed connector.

I have read it's still unfinished, buggy & TPM friendly so be careful :hillbilly:

And i switched to Windows 10 (Already done 22 reinstallation till date due to numerous bugs and unknown critical problems in OS:trashing:) in Jan 2020 when Windows 7 was expired so you can understand what i wanna tell you...

Interesting, didn't know about that, really thought this is a processor "feature". Anyway, my Gigabyte Z97X-SLi does not have such a connector and as my i7 is a socket 1151 proc, i might still have no choice but upgrading more than my motherboard.

not that I would want go offtopic here, but may I ask what audio interface are you going to use with AV Linux,
and also why do you prefer AV Linux over MacOS?
fellow Reaper user here, also familiar with Bitwig

Stick with Windows 10 or Linux. Windows 11 is a piece of shit always-online surveillance OS.

    Windows 23

It's the year 2051, another update. Even better and faster than the last one.

The usual Microshit issues to get really good performance you need to upgrade the PC which may cost as much as a new PC. Microscum is just as treacherous and greedy as zuckerturd's FukBook always wanting to control our lives by continually spying on and censoring us. I just wish Linux was 100% compatible with all Windows based programs and applications, I'd switch so fast you'd think it was a lightning strike.

Any quality USB2 or USB3 DAC will work with Linux for Stereo Output. Some require some config file editing to list the device & usable settings.

Currently testing AV Linux MXE on a older Dell laptop using a generic USB2 2-in/2-out interface. Also ran AV Linux from a USB live session on a MacBook 2014 Air with no errors. everything worked including WiFi & USB 3.0 ports.

Zoom UAC has native Linux drivers. Others known to work with Linux include Focusrite, Tascam, Roland, Behringer, MOTU as some examples.

Sorry to hear that, z97 is a bit old but the computer might be still good enough for what you need, Intel is planning on releasing new HEDT cpus in a year or two, might wanna keep an eye on that as it will be mac pro workstation killer for pros with the latest techs, from 10nm cpus (on par with amd 7nm) PCIe5 and ddr5...if you ask me that's more than work the upgrade.

I'm still in the process of testing Windows 8 lite for audio and it is not better performing than Windows 7. Windows 11??? I can bet they say it's "better, faster, and more productive" lies again. Yeah, I've seen a ton of W11 videos and read a ton of articles, it is certainly "everything but" [butt?]

When I see a lite Windows version out, then I consider a M$ OS mature enough for an audio and video workstation. And then you test it, and test it, and test it again... until your fingers start bleeding. :(

However, Linux is really going strong lately. I've been using Debian Linux [now at 9], and will soon upgrade to 10, for 8 years and I'm a very satisfied customer. It installs quickly and works easily with most audio interfaces I throw at it, even though the manufacturer hasn't provided Linux drivers. People make drivers for the most popular audio devices, so if you get RME or Focusrite you are ready to make music within half an hour.

Windows 11 currently sounds like a bad joke to me... sorry, I couldn't restrain myself. Watch Linus' YT videos about it. It's very revealing, especially about W11' performance, but also the interface which is so f-ed up.

But whatever works for you, or you think works for you, makes me happy. Having a ton of beta testers is always a good thing. You're heroes, people. I love reading about your experiences, watching YT videos about it, because I always have to be ready for the next thing.

Current thing that works for me is W7, MacOS Mojave, and Debian 9. Yeah, to some this will sound similar to saying Atari, C64, and Amiga, I know... But ironed out thing that works smoothly feels great for making music because you don't have to worry about the system and drivers, just making music.

    Cheers!

edit: added winking at the end and some missing letters. :)

I think you underestimate your machine. I tried on a workhorse machine not as good as yours. Picture evidence tells the story.
    You can bypass it.
Honestly, people have to decide one of two questions:

    1. Is my machine a DAW? Yes, so therefore I really do not need much Internet access and if I do, I'll create a separate non-Admin login that has no access to my DAW and DAW apps.
    2. My machine must have both at all times - Then probably get the TPM 2 chip installed.
With some googling and reading, you can pretty much lock down anything administrative for access, in a standard user login, so that any standard user login that picks up any malware or virus cannot do anything except trash that profile. Look up 'custom workstation group policies' (gpedit.msc) - Make notes in a text file of changes you make in case you want to undo anything. You can do your own security - and YES get the PRO or Enterprise version. You can also disable specific user access to disks and folders - this is old, but the same principle.. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/8035/how-to-restrict-access-to-drive-in-my-computer-on-windows/

~AND~ also disable specific user Internet access to your DAW login in case you get tempted and leave the standard profile alone. This is ok - see the answers in this link

I have been using win11 since it leaked and I have not had any issues with my audio production related apps/plugins/etc... I also would not say it is better in any way either, specifically related to audio production. It is much more a facelift or re-skin then it is an entirely new OS. I will concur on a few graphic related issues for gaming and video editing tho.

Whether it is or not in your opinion, the 64bit version was dodgy and the 32bit version as stable as it was, only supported less than 4GB RAM and had random issues with GPT drives, USB 3, SSD and much more.

I am still using Win 7 ultimate for my work machine, it works perfectly for my needs is completely offline and the few Win 10 programs that I wanted work on 7 as well. I haven't had any problems yet. I don't use a lot of plugins and have everything I need for my music and don't need to keep updating my software if it does what I require. I have another PC with 10 for net use, downloading and testing new plugins and apps, if i have to I'll install Linux Zorin 16 on it as a dual boot setup.

Yeah, i'm still able to create tunes, play latest games & stream on twitch - just no win11 :) Which, atm, is not really a must have.
