It kind of reminds me of a documentary I watched ages ago that went all the way back to Tin Pan Alley - the amazing thing is the level of ingrained slight of hand (and historically how it grew).

Great doco every musician or anyone earning some profit from the music business should see.

Regarding plugin prices, I noticed on Plugin Boutique and ADSR Sounds such bargains last couple of years, generally since the Covid kicked in, it's incredible. Yeah, you can get some plugins for 95% off. That unfortunately means many developers are scrapped for money, too, and that's not good. Well, no wonder as the society has changed considerably especially for some of us... I'm barely surviving and can't even afford plugins at 95% discount. [big thank you to our savours R2R, RET and V.R]

Broke: Plugin Companies as they currently exist
Woke: 2 Payment options, like Patreon you can pay for each new plugin that comes out and/or give a constant sum (for maintenance) and pray that it works with the finances. Jk you don't need Jesus if you actually code decent plugins.
TLDR, Just do it like TDR (I know they have a different model, but close enough) ;)
