In a deep fit of nostalgia for the Commodore 64 days, I'm anxiously awaiting picking up a C64. I've held off due to the circuitous route of getting one shipped to the US, plus wanting to be sure they were working as intended before taking the plunge.
Anyone pick it up yet? If so, what are your thoughts? Played anything other than the games that come with it?

My favourite computer from my childhood. Definitely in some way responsible for my love of music.

 

Ghosts And Goblins!! Next to Zak McKracken one of the best games on the C64

 

Be very very careful what cable you plug where.
Even if you got one back in the days, we're not used to that kind of plugs any more.
Like when you accidently mix up the power cord with the monitor or the serial cable:
One of those DIN Pins will get contact and fry something.
That way most sids die.

 

I can't help, but I remember...
Actually before that I had the Vic 20. Pure expensive crap, but the right crap for that time.
Then the C64, I remember it had a simplified FM synth of some kind, with OPL chips (I think), DX7 was the star so it was nice to have a ultraslim emulator.
Slow like the hell, it took half an hour to load a grossly pixeled game from cassette (it seems to me it was Bruce Lee or Kung fu or something), and many times it crashed before loading.

I love history, but it's past history.

 

Loved my C64 back in the day, I've still got it up in the attic but I'm not sure if it works, I haven't tried to switch it on for years. These days if I want a bit of nostalgia I use the C64 Forever emulator.

 

@orbitbooster there are cartridges that add acceleration to the floppy drive and tape recorder and I love listening to SID until today

 

Amazing how Microsoft coded Flight Simulator for that computer on a 1.44 floppy!

 

I scrapped all that stuff I think in 94 or so, I also use as less as possible CDs or DVDs, very unreliable for backups, at the time I trusted them, to my expenses.

I actually remember a DOS game that I loved much and it took 1 floppy only, I think I still have it.

Terrible graphics, but fast and playable, even with mouse as cyclic control, more or less like Google earth sim.

Whether it's so good for the eyes, the blurry graphics. And the slow loading speed.

I do agree.
Nostalgia sometimes takes over, but just to remind me how wonderful is to enjoy all these amenities today.

 

Oh man, I bought that "Final Cartridge III". Of course to pirate (copy games)
But I remember how fast was with the floppy disk unit.
And it had an integrated windows OS. My first windows based operating system, using a one button joystick. Crazy days.
The SID sound chip is a legend on its own. Sampled sounds, those Ocean Loaders (Rob Hubbard was the man)...

 

I started to make music with a c-64, tracking funny old days.
Today i miss it only by the pure nostalgia in the name of the 80’s (sdi as a tracker, maniac mansion as a game).Today we have some nice solution to dig with the sid chip.
