Just wondering what others use/what is the best software for riping audio from YouTube for samples etc?

Not for samples specifically but rather general purpose. I use RME's Totalmix for loopback, then just record what i need in any daw. I think Audient, Motu and UAD can do something like that too, in case you have any of those.

Whereas macOS since the start of OSX has something called CoreAudio built into the OS.
Apps like WireTap or the like just do what you'd do with CoreAudio anyway, which is why I find those all to be strange products.
We can just route anything to anything; browser to daw.
I hope this happens for Windows at some point.

Absolutely correct. As far as I know its the only tool that downloads the original audiostrea without reencoding. You can choose to download only audio or video. If you download it also downloads the audio and video streams separately and multiplex them after the download via ffmpeg without a loss in quality.

 

The utility youtube-dl is reportedly dead, but one of its forks still works (as of posting this reply, it was last updated... yesterday).

I honestly just record using OBS and then convert the file to audio with a separate program.

Who rips audio from YouTube . YouTube audio = crap audio .
But if you want to, the best free things to use are jdownloader2 or Audacity.

I use youtube-dl: https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl

Easy to use. Just open cmd or in my case bash command line and write: youtube-dl -F [youtube link here] and you get a list of all the formats available for download. Then write youtube-dl -f135+140 [youtube link here] and you will get a perfect .mp4 video file. Great thing about it is simplicity, it just works, and you can combine all the formats there is on Youtube the way you prefer it. Of course you can only download audio or video etc. Just irreplaceable for me. There are versions for every OS.

A tip: to get a true MP4 file you should use M4V and M4A formats, and if you want Opus files you should combine Opus video and audio. If you don't know what you're doing youtube-dl will download the best format there is for you automatically if you just input youtube-dl [youtube link here].

I'm not sure what you are saying, but yes, YT is lossy audio as per mp3.
The nature of rendering a video is such, plus YT down res it anyway.

 

The easiest way ist really jDownloader...you can even chose which of the available formats you want to download.
