which of this two plugins should i use so that it becomes easier for me to do stuff.

Gullfoss always seems to work for me. It, at least, always seems to improve the material.
Smart EQ is more hit-or-miss and I occasionally get weird-sounding results.

Is it actually "miles ahead" or is that just an opinion? Is it a common preference?

Not to be rude, but can't you fix it in the mix? Or ask the client to fix the mix?

Sonically and technically Smart EQ is a (much) superior product. It is based on transparent and logical principles of auto-EQ-ing while Gullfoss is built on a pretty confusing scheme of variable multiple EQ bands entanglement, and is heavily user (i.e. arbitrariness) dependent, which leads to auto EQ-ing becoming a nonsense.
Some Gullfoss functions (like 'recover' and 'tame' at certain settings start to behave contradictory, and excluding frequency bands command also does not exclude completely on every occasion) just malfunction. And that's not all, just some examples.
For instance, this is what you get with the pink noise input, and 'tame' and 'recover' set at 50%

Is this happening with the last available version of Gullfoss (from today) ? The previous one was not working as it should (it's written in the new release .nfo).

Due to the question, I'm not sure that you personally should need to worry about it.

I have succesfully used Gulfoss for fixing vocal recordings with proximity effect and de-essing. But what love it most for: putting it on the mixbus, pull up the Tame and listen to what happens. Then I decide if I like the "suggestions " Gulfoss gave me and go back to track level mixing. But I never actually use it on the mixbus. It's sort of a quick look into the future of what the mix could sound like if I want to bring it in that direction, and usually it's a good direction.

I love Smart EQ, but use it more in the mix. Gullfoss could not get the results I need without tons of tweeking and lost time.

Smooth Operator beats them all on the Master buss, I have tried them all. It also shortened my 2 buss chain. I no longer need multi band comps or Master EQ near as often. I might add that it is extremely easy to use.

PS. I just seen a new version of Gullfoss out. I will give it another try.

One might consider specialized resonance taming software like DSEQ3 or TDR Nova GE (dynamic mode).
In my experience, DSEQ3 might remove muddiness in bass range quite efficiently, especially if you spend some time in testing various settings.
But the best results I get with combination of SmartEQ3 and DSEQ3.

Interesting to see people speak highly of Smooth Operator. I was under the impression it was a budget version of Soothe, and that it couldn't do anything that Soothe or DSEQ can't. Looks like I'm gonna have to take a closer look at it.
