i am also using one of the huge anti-ad list of entries, and a nice collection of warez-releated blocks in addition would be very welcome.

Once I read somewhere on forum that stuff from MS listed in hosts file is not really blocked and they might bypass their own websites/servers somehow, but this needs to be confirmed.

    //
    http://www.infoworld.com/article/2641599

... starting in XP Pro SP2 and W2K3 SP1, various Microsoft-related URLs cannot be bypassed by placing alternate IP addresses in the Windows hosts file. It appears to be a strategy by Microsoft to not allow malicious host file changes to stop Microsoft patch updates, plus hardcoding a few other Microsoft URLs.

This bypass affects the following urls:

    • windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    • windowsupdate.com
    • microsoftupdate.com
    • download.microsoft.com
    • update.microsoft.com
    • microsoft.com
    • www.microsoft.com
    • support.microsoft.com
    • wustats.microsoft.com
    • microsoftupdate.microsoft.com
    • office.microsoft.com
    • msdn.microsoft.com
    • go.microsoft.com
    • msn.com
    • www.msn.com
    • msdn.com
    • www.msdn.com

This is pretty old, but we might suspect that telemetry servers might be also included these days.

I also read about it. It seems very likely to be true at the Windows Firewall service too.

There's an entire debate on if it also affects the BFE (Base Filtering Engine) which is kind of the base service. For instance, Windows Firewall depends on this.

That's why was developed SimpleWall. A simple but powerful Firewall that only relies on the BFE with additional options. Too bad is recently discontinued.

    Wow, yeah.
    Be careful though.
It blocked spam and it blocked all the porn but it also blocked sister site and blocked me from here and uninstalled my LAN driver and unplugged my router and locked all the doors in my house and my wife refuses to have sex with me.

OK maybe it just blocked the spam and the rest is my own fault.

    Hey guys,

    The best tip...
...I got lately (if I remember right it was an AZ fellow*) is replacing 127.0.0.1 with 0.0.0.0
If you use 127.0.0.0 Windows tries to find the local host and that takes a (small) amount of time, lets say 1/4 second.

If you have - like me - a HOSTS file with a longer list of IPs to be blocked this builds up to several seconds. And THAT you will feel when you start Programs using blocked IPs.

But if you take 0.0.0.0 instead, programs wil start instantaneously without looking some seconds for the lokal host.

So stop using 127.0.0.0 but use 0.0.0.0 instead! Same function just 10x quicker

    * Oh, yes. The tip comes from @Haliax and he deserves a best answer for it.

Another problem is that some virtual server features are sometimes run on 127.0.0.0 - you would probably run into problems then.
