Thoughts on the NX Head Tracker

Discussion in 'Soundgear' started by Vincent Price, Jul 20, 2021.

  1. Hello

I want to know your thought on the NX Head Tracker

I have got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros and also Abbey Road Studio 3 and wondering if the investment of the head tracker would be worth it or not?

Also, if so...is anyone selling one?

    Cheers

I found Waves NX works well with ToneBoosters Morph-it,
with both the DT880 and K712 headphones I've got..

I think Morph-it does a better job than Sonarworks,
and it's also way more practical, lightweight, less intrusive and troublesome..

As for Abbey Road, it's different than NX,
interesting to hear it for the curiosity, as it's got a very marked character/sound of its own..
It's good, but I will not use it as a reference.. for that I would prefer NX more generic sound/effect.

In general terms tho, even when NX + Morph It works good for me,
I take this as a very very Relative point of view, to see there's nothing utterly crazy on the mix.

I still do not base my mixes on this, but only check it from time to time, or as one of the final steps..
(And I do not use the Head Tracking part, only the sweet spot speaker+room simulation..
Head-tracking surely works, and it's interesting, but I've got no use for it)

Knowing your gear, sounds, and process/es,
and knowing your Monitors or Headphones is more important.

And the best way to get there is Practice,
so the more you use it/them the more you'll be able to take/make from it, and also compensate for it..

I agree that the NX head tracker works well. It simply makes little sense mixing while turning your head. I second with @
Ŧยχøя, the beauty of any of the headphone flattening/cross feed room emulation is that you can always be in the sweet spot. Great when you can't fit all your gear in front of you. Perfect when your room is not well treated. Funny thing is I have an SPL Phonitor that I purchased many years ago. It does all the cross feed processing in analog. The theory and tech has been around a long time. I believe plugins are still working on what the best way to do all this. Cool times indeed. This whole sweet spot changes when you start mixing for Ambisonics (or similar encoder/decode object based sound) for games where the player will control head movement. My 2 cents.
