I have just bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros and they work fine with my Apollo Twin MKII

However, I think the case will be much different in regards to using them with my MacBook Pro...which headphone amplifier would you recommend that is easily portable?

 

what i wanted to do when i got the dt770 pro 250ohms (before fucking up one of the drivers), is that i bought a usb-c dac from aliexpress: https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005001691208778.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.365d63c0anLv4g and it also comes with an adapter. if your mac doesn't have a usb-c port.

i think it supports up to 600 ohms headphones

 

MacBook Pro is a 2015 model, so has the USB and thunderbolt ports on it

 

that usb-c dac + adapter should work well for you. i tried it on my laptop (i have the usb-c port, but i was wondering) and it worked. and it is actually quite good for what it did cost

 

Just stick to the UA Apollo amplifier, man. Are you joking? Why would you think a MacBook amp would be better? It's crap. Especially regarding 600 ohm headphones. If the headphones had like 30-40 ohm impedance, then alright, but more impedance always means more flat response, so keep using your Apollo amp, I'm sure it's far better. Also far better than the cheap headphone amps [especially USB ones] they sell on E-Bay. You have all you need to make great stuff. Keep going and don't worry.

They have good reputation of doing cheap+good stuff,
and it comes in all shapes, Small/portable to Desktop..

I don't know about portable stuff,
but apparently for desktop nothing beats the THX 789/888 type stuff in terms of Technical Quality/Cleanness..

Other brands use the THX tech of course, they're not the only ones,
but it seems they mostly do a good job..

 

About 2 weeks ago, I was using my 990pros and I noticed they were not working correctly, and it was driving me nuts. It turned out the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter was the problem. How does that even occur? I have not seen one of them "go bad" in all my years working on this stuff.

I don't think l ever tested them with a Twin, but every other interface I have used them with has needed a headphones amp. I just run mine from my console and that works for me. little labs monotor. I use it to drive my hd800s's. Easily portable. 4 outs (dual 1/4", dual 3.5mm). Stereo, mono, phase modes. And the sound?

 

I have those very headphones with a Schiit Magni/Modi combination. However, it's not what I'd call portable and is on my desktop setup.
