Is there a program out there that does what Audacity does — only better?

Audacity behaves unpredictably across all of my computers/platforms, so I'm looking for an alternative (paid is absolutely fine) that will allow me to edit audio in the precise ways allowed by Audacity as well as arrange several tracks above/around each other.

he most likely wants a full featured, standalone wave editor. not a multi-track.

soundforge or wavelab. you like one or the other.

they are to audio what photoshop is to graphics, or solidworks is to machining. etc.
free utilities are great, but there are usually industry standard products, for good reason.

I take it that your looking for a audio editor...I highly recommend Adobe Audition. As I've tried many others over 20yrs, Audition has become my go to editor. There are many youtube videos on to how use Audition but if your interested I teach on a 1 on 1 basis on how to use audio software.

"...as well as arrange several tracks above/around each other."
    I think that implies multitrack.
..but don't Wavelab and Sound Forge have that?
    I think so.

Agreed. But since he said "better" and "as well as arrange several tracks above/around each other" I figured it's easier and there are more options when it comes to DAWs. I've used Wavelab since 1996 myself and promote it, if he would want a dedicated wave editor rather than a DAW.

The best 'alternative' to Audacity might be:
    https://ivosight.com/soundop/
In fact it is much better, and beside other things (see the description Web page), supports VST3.
    Price: $79.00.
There is a working cracked version, but regretfully not on sister site.

By the way, Audacity (and I think most other Muse Group programs) now has built-in telemetry. Uninstall asap.

There's either Audition (which unlike Photoshop still works well to this day despite the bloat) or if you want an easier to use Audacity but with -I think- all of Audacity's features there's Ocenaudio, been using it ever since Muse Group decided to add telemetry in Audacity.

For a lightweight, there is "Wavosaur" as a wave editor like Wavelab and Sound Forge yet it's free and portable.
its interface reminds the early soundforge. I use it when need a quicky. 5Mb with all the features it is magic in the bloated era.

It's not, it's full-on telemetry apparently.Thank the NSA, they literally said your shit will help in criminal investigations.

The work "apparently" is doing a lot of work here. Audacity had plans for telemetry but it does not have such.

Anyway, I'd be very keen to know how sending crash dumps regarding SQLite to Audacity would help NSA regardless.

I'm not about to get hysterical every time the word "telemetry" pops up, but to each their own.

Out of the few editors I've tried, RX8 and Acoustica are my favorites. RX8 is my go-to editor, but it's quite expensive. Acoustica Expert is even cheaper than RX8 Standard and Acoustica Standard is only a quarter of the price of RX8 Standard.

EDIT: Forgot about the "arrange several tracks above/around each other" which RX8 doesn't really do (I think?). It has a composite view, where you can edit several files "as one". Acoustica has a more traditional, DAW like multritrack functionality.

Great, now point to the policy document instead of cherry picking:

    https://www.audacityteam.org/about/desktop-privacy-notice/
But this is way off topic now.
