In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson premeiners BlackBird Studio and Kit Audio’s brand new plugin, BBN105. This plugin is a faithful recreation of the legendary Neve 8078 in studio A at BlackBird in Nashville, Tn.

The Neve 8078 was the last of the “80 series” hand-wired analogue mixing consoles designed and manufactured by Neve Electronics, founded in 1961 by the English electronics engineer Rupert Neve, for high-end recording studios during the 1970s. Some were custom built for major studios like CBS Sony.

Considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of recording consoles and Neve’s most desirable mixer, the 8078 traditionally contains varying numbers of input channels via 31105 microphone/line preamp and EQ modules. These discrete modules feature 438 and 440 amplifiers, and use the same 10468 mic transformer and 31267 line transformers as the Neve 1073s. The EQ features 4-bands with high and low-pass filters, shelving select, Hi-Q select and phase switching.

Only a limited number of the 8078 consoles were made with just a handful remain in working condition and are still used, making them incredibly valuable. The consoles can be used for mixing, signal boosting via mic/line preamps, levelling, EQ and also track summing, making them suitable for a wide variety of projects. Some consoles have been built with a varying number of input and mixing channels to facilitate projects of different sizes, ranging from 28 up to 72 input channels.

The Neve 8078 will impart the expected vintage, warm tones of Neve and bring bold, smooth character to audio signals that are processed. Neve consoles and sound, such as that of the 8078, have featured on classic records by artists including Pink Floyd, Quincy Jones, Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Dire Straits and many more.

Follow Marc as he breaks down a track by legendary country artist Martina McBride using the BBN105 plugin!

Kit Plugins is the company making the plugin with Blackbird Studios (https://kitplugins.com). Check out their site and you can download a free saturation plugin called Burier. About to install it now.

This one seem to be very promising. Hopefully we will be able to do try-before-buy.

The free plugin Burier seems to be well done. Adds slight character boost at insertion. Internal gain compensation make settings easy & accurate. Using it subtly before a modeled Pultec EQ adds warmth and excites frequencies revealing the actual characteristics of the plugin.

If the price is fair and, the quality is there (as expected), I will be all in. And of course no iLok BS.

Tried this plug-in for about 2min when it was released. I figured the harmonic analysis would look something like this!

Edit: Installed it again now just to see how it responds while running inside Metaplugin, and you can get rid of pretty much all of the aliasing, as long as you run it on 8x OS with the signal gain-staged to -18dB. However, that's just too much fiddling around, and too high CPU usage, to run a distorted filter IMO.

    Hi Everyone,
    Sorry this took some time.

Version 1.1 of the BB N105 is now available!

In this update we have addressed the GUI errors that affected platforms and fixed the error in which the plugin did not appear in a DAW after installation. We are sorry about these problems and hope with this patch more users will be able to enjoy our product.

Additionally, all 7-day free trials have been extended. Anyone that has already started a free trial may use the new installer and receive another free week.

Kit Plugins BB N105 Version 1.1 Changes:

-Fixed graphical user interface falling apart in some DAWs.
-Fixed graphical user interface being too small when using the plugin in systems with low resolution displays connected.
-Fixed a bug in line mode being able to move the preamp knob.
-Fixed some DAWs not finding the plugin after installation. Reboot required after installing on macOS.

Please download the updated installer from the Downloads section on www.kitplugins.com.

If you have any additional questions/concerns please do not hesitate to email our support team at: [email protected]

Now that is what I like to see from a software developer. Quick & sincere response to issues that pop up.

Looking forward to future product releases to from you. Keep up the good work and best wishes!

PS: For those that have mentioned CPU usage. So far I have not experienced any system overload inside a full session resulting in spitting & sputtering. CPU usage in Reaper seems to be very dynamic. Pro Tools is the next platform for a full session test. Not expecting any issues.

no offence but anyone who complains about CPU usage about plugins doesn't care about how reaper handles it - they're not using reaper. We know how reaper works... we know it's crazy optimized but it's not what we are using

Working perfectly for me in Audiogridder on my windows 10 Nuc Server inserted into the latest Studio One 5 as host on my Mac Mini M1.

Interface graphics are fine. It sounds pretty amazing. I put it across my vocal comp buss and Wow..just Wow!!! Really silky top end, I don't care about graphs and numbers, what I'm hearing I like EOS.

I'll do further testing over the weekend on my current work but initially, I'm good to go because I'm not that concerned with CPU usage (initially it isn't too bad but I'll test that further) If its a problem I'm a Print & Commit kind of guy as that's pretty much my workflow anyway

The new version is out? great..Like all re-engineered plugs, it's the luck of the draw as to working with all Daws. The fact that it exists without that scourge the iLoc is awesome.

Some of the comments in here are hilarious, This is not hardware (obviously) but there is no doubt this is a taste of the BB board. It can be a morsel or a feast. Like all cooking, there are some that can and some that can't, who listens to critics anyway? Most are clueless snobs. Throw away the cookbook and learn to cook I say...works for me

Err, not quite. A CPU hog is a CPU hog is a ... no matter how 'hoggy' the plugin is or which DAW you're using. Even if it needs less with Reaper, it still needs more than other comparable plugins.

It seems mileage varies per setup. It sucks 10% to 11% resources for my system, while others report lower CPU and others still, report very high CPU. The Plugin doesn't seem coded optimally, that's for sure..
