    Yupp, it's about that time. Already got my Actric Silver 5 and my heatgun. It's only gonna get worse.
    Figured I minus well reflow my whole motherboard while im at it. Im gonna do it heatgun style instead of the old oven trick because it's more precise and I never get to use my heatgun.

    Im doing this because my cpu has been spiking whenever my pc temp gets hot(the higher my pc temp=the more cpu spikes).
    Sometimes it gets so badd that I cant even watch a youtube video without the cpu shootin up to 100 and eventually griding the youtube video to a halt. More importantly I can't run as many plugins or 24bit wav. tracks as I use to. Production time has been double if not tripled because of this bullshit. Smh and to top that all off I think this is also the cause of my hardware interrupts.

    Only thing im worried about is fuckin up taking my laptop apart/putting it back together. But im pretty sure I got that on lock (knock on wood).

    Your CPU spikes because it's probably throttled down due to temperature. Regarding thermal paste, I highly recommend Shin-Etsu, everything is running cooler than ever before. :thumbsup:

    Try choking your cpu down in your power options, to 90% or lower [IMG]

    I do cleaning and even repairing the laptops for my clients. Yeah, tear it apart carefully labelling the screws, change the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, probably chipset, too, and especially clean the fan and all the dust built-up that accumulated. Actually, cleaning the fan and all the dust would probably do the trick, however, once you unscrewed about 70-80 screws and labelled them [cannot stress the importance of that enough!], you just want to do a proper job, eh? ;) So yeah, change the paste too, absolutely. I still use Artic Silver 5, but only because I still have some left. I've heard there are better thermal pastes out now. Hell even the Arctic "Ceramique 2" is better. What I like about it is that it can last quite a bit longer. Oh, there's is an even better paste out now... http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=1 Arctic MX-4. Reading about it maybe it's time to invest in some MX-4 myself... :)

    P.S. and remember this when applying the paste: LESS is MORE. Just put a little bit of it in the middle of the chip. It'll get spread evenly by itself as soon as the temperature becomes high enough. That's the BEST way to apply it. I get chills when I see how they do it in the factory, by drowning the chip with some low quality gooey... it does more harm than good. When I buy something new, I always reapply the paste myself before using it [like new VGA, CPU, laptop...] It always makes an immediate difference in temperatures.

    Cheers!

    I agree to the utmost degree! GOTS to have my screws on lock!!! I have magnet slabs and a whole magnetized portion of my work desk out in the garage so that helps me alot.
    Going to order up some new paste asap. I didn't know they came out with some many upgrades. I use to/still do repair ps3's(mostly old big gigs) and I always use Acrtic Silver 5 so I have ALOT of it lol. Too bad you just cant trade in the paste. That MX-4 sounds promising!!!

    As far as applying the paste. I usually use a card to spread it out evenly but I may use your method as it does sound more legit in the long run.

    @Nightwalker.
    I assume this is a desktop computer you speak of. I don't own a desktop. I own a laptop and you cant just clean out a laptop lol.
    Thermal paste mostly disintegrates due to overheating. The reason you have not had to reapply yours is most likey because your pc does not overheat as mines does as desktops are generally much more well vented than desktops.

    Them 2 sentences say it all.

    Laptops are worse then Desktops for slowing down due to dirt, since they have smaller and fewer airflow channels for cooling. At a guess I'm going to say your laptop has about 1 clear path for air circulation remaining and that's only clear because of the air pressure generated by the fan.

    If you don't want to take it apart, just use a strong vacuum cleaner to suck all the dust out via the fan and all vents in the machine.

    Thermal paste doesn't degrade. It dose in some cases solidify but as CPU cooling system is not meant to be removed from a installed CPU, the Thermal paste being in solid or liquid form is of no importance as it functions the same.
    The only time it being solid or liquid matters is when the CPU's cooling system is removed from the CPU and then reinstalled. If the Thermal paste is solid it will not flow out equally when it is compressed and therefore will not create the maximum contact it is created to form between the CPU and CPU cooling system.

    I have a number of machines that have no thermal past in them at all. As the paste's function is only to ensure maximum contact between CPU and CPU cooling system, the CPU will function with a cooling system that is well fitted to the CPU without Thermal past.

    Running machines without thermal past is not recommended. The machines I have running without are old machines that are built out of the best parts from machines distend for the bin.

    @Nightwalker.
    no problemo nintendo!

    @Zalbadar

    Lol thanks man. I've been working on computers for a while and i've seen thermal paste completely disintegrate and I am absolutely sure this is what has happened in my case....like, no doubt about it. I know exactly how to fix it as I have worked with various motherboards on from various machines.

    I clean my keyboard and vent every three months or so. I would clean it more often but I am what they call..."lazy as fuck".

    Believe me man. I need thermal paste...like burgers need cheese. I just hate taking things apart that have more than 5 screws due to my condition, lazyasfuckitis. Thanks for your input tho. :bow:

    The problem is that stock/factory heatsinks don't usually use thermal paste. The stuff they use is more like a thermal puddy sticker that you peel off.

    Are your heatsinks bracketless? If they have some sort of clipping mechanism, do not use ceramic paste.

    Properly applied thermal paste does not disappear, if it does that means the heatsink is not properly seated or it was incorrectly applied in the first place.

    Tip: Whenever you remove a heatsink always make sure you get the contact surfaces completely clean by using 80% or 90% or 100% isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a coffee filter (because they are lint free).

    Update!
    Pc is running smoother than buttered ice cubes.
    I did loose one screw but that usually happens whenever I take anything as sophisticated as a pc down. Shit got SERIOUS for a second when I dropped some ketchup on my fan (yea I was eat in chicken nuggets while fixin my pc). I thought I had dropped some on the mobo too but its runnin smooth so I think Ima start dropping ketchup in all my electronics. Jk thanks for all the help yall.

    Man, I don't know how many screws I lost - and how many new curse words I invented - when I had to break into my old iMac (thank heaven for ifixit.com) some time ago.
    Using duct tape to hold it all together these days.
