Discussion in 'Working with Sound' started by Vincent Price, Apr 16, 2021.

  1. Hello

Does anyone know how the pet shop Boys made this tom sound or what they may have used for it?

    Thanks

It is a drum machine with a standard kick/tom impulse + keytrack and pitch envelope sweeping through.

    Move parameters to taste.

I don't know what you use or how familiar you are with concept but it isn't really difficult to do and if you are fussy it might require an envelope or some manual automation. I could explain how to do it in several synths which you might not have or know how to use, so that's not an efficient use of either of our time.

If you like a specific synth or drum machine and I am familiar with it, I try to explain it if someone else doesn't do it by the time I check back in. If you are not tied to anything, then you can probably just use dr. duckduck or mr. google and figure it out quite easily.

If you want to recreate that same exact sound with the same exact tools, well then I am not an archivist though someone else might know.

Then it probably is the SDS-800 which fits time wise with the song.

I think I read somewhere that the Pet shop Boys used Syndrums and Linn to play that song. The rest from AKAI samplers and Fairlight
Here's a link talking about the Syndrum:

Looks like @recycle is right. Best answer changed.

Since I've never heard of Syndrum and don't know if anyone has ever made an emu of them, I suggest you use a Simmons emu to get most close.
