Ok, so I previously made the mistake of dumping all my music in one file when trying to transfer everything over to a new computer and am now wanting to tidy it up a bit.

Anyone got any tips or examples of how you guys sort and store your music, e.g. folder structures on hard drive etc?

    Much appreciated in advance!

Edit: nothing beats good metadata tags for organisation

I think you'll find useful File Sorting Utility.

Though you can edit mp3 metadata with it, I personally use Mp3Tag for metadata, and after FSU for sorting and to create folders based on chosen criteria (example alphabetical, genre, etc.) and moves or copy files.
Test it before doing the real thing in anyway.

Cheers for this. Sounds useful (and old!). When I try to download at the link you gave I get this though:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

    "); background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: bottom; height: 10px;"><Error>

I organise everything in folder, I'm not using playlist in DJ software, as I play on different thing all the time, mainly on Traktor and CDJ (and I got to many tracks or - I'm too lazy - to add them on rekordbox playlist).

My folder structure look like this :
    DJ name (I use 5 different alias)/Main genre/sub genre/BPM (a 5 bpm range like from 120 to 124)/Energy level (3 or 4 different levels)

For DJ names I have 10 differents folder, but in real I "only" use 5 names), it's just a way to organize by different "spirit" in the music, so you can use a different way for that part (I use to put club name, but they change quickly so it can be confusing, that's why I change to name from my mind). The idea is to have a global categorie (but if you play only one kind of genre, like "house" in general, this one is not useful)

The Main genre, is not necessary to, but as I have lot of main genre, I organise by main genre to make less folder in a folder. It's not necessary a genre in itself, for exemple my more house alias got 4 main genre that are "club", "deep", "disco", "fun". In "club" it's the more underground stuff vs "fun" where it's more accessible stuff, like old filter house or things with vocal, "deep" is more deep and progressive stuff, and "disco" is more disco stuff like old edit, or even original disco tracks.

Then th sub genre is more like a niche genre, sometime it's not even a real genre, but just something that (for me) feel in the same sub genre, for exemple on my techno folder, I got "techno festival", "techno electro", "techno house", "techno house dirty" (which is not like "tech house"), "deep techno", "techno light", "leftfield techno dirty", "leftfield techno clean"... The point is to have a precise idea of what inside. And if I use track only from one folder, then it's going to be a really boring and linear set.

The sub genre is then organise by BPM, by a range of 5, so it goes like "120-124", "125-129", "130-134" and so on.

Then the bpm is classify by energy, I got usually "1 Low", "2 mid", "3 hi", and something a "4 higher" in case that some really hard track arrive and they got nowhere else to go

Also for older track I have some specific sub genre that are the same as normal subgenre but with the year, I do that only for sound before 2010, but you can do it for every new song too, for exemple having a 2 years period and create a new folder every 2 years.

At the end I got a lot of folder, but to avoid having to many tracks, I can have "only" 200 tracks by 3 energy folder (for exemple 200 maxi in the deep house/120-124/ folder, no matter if it's low, mid or hi. So if I reach that number I have to delete a track to add a new one, or create a new subgenre.

Basically, a folder will look like that :

    House DJ Name/
    .................../Club/
    ........................./Acid House/
    ......................................./120-124/
    ................................................../1 Low--------)
    ................................................./2 Mid----------)-- 200 tracks max
    ................................................./3 Hi-----------)
    ......................................./125-129
    ......................................./130-134
    ........................./Breakbeat
    ........................./Tech House
    ........................./Leftfield House
    ........................./UK House
    ........................./1990-1994 House
    ........................./1995-1999 House
    .................../Deep/
    .................../Disco/
    .................../Fun/

And same for every folder like the Acid House folder (usually I got around 15 subgenre folder for each main genre).

Don't know if it's clear, I try to explain precisely, so it can maybe give you inspiration. At the end, the way you organize your track is very personnal and a thing that can work for one will not necessary works for you.

Also to tag my file, I use Easy CD-Audio Converter, every time I got a new track I tag it correctly, and it's also great to rename everything according to the id3 info (I rename everything with the same "system" so it's easier to avoid double version of the same track)

    Hope that help :)

You're right, it seems broken, and the funny thing is that I can't find it anywhere else, it appears that I'm the only living being to have it!

If possible I'll send it in PM .

    Sent.

I use Tag & Rename by Softpointer which uses discogs to tag albums, works pretty well in 95% of cases. To organize my music and add more tags I use JRiver Media Center. To get the BMP / key, Sononym gives some good results
