WFC is quite reliable as an application. But it's not a firewall by it's own (as NetLimiter is), but handles the settings for the Windows firewall only. But with a much more intuitive UI. Windows firewall out of the box is almost unusable for the normal PC user. So this little proggy helps a lot. By default WFC asks the user for allowance for every new app that wishes to connect to the outside world.

The problem is, that a setup program can define firewall exceptions for any program without informing the user. This means, everytime you install a program you must be aware of those exceptions and delete them by hand if you wish to.
In the end WIndows firewall is the problem and WFC is just an UI for it.

BTW If I remember right, you are on hackintosh. For Mac OS you can define a cron job for SCP that syncs files between machines quite easy. SCP works over an SSH session.
"scp -p <port> <user>@<host>:/path/to/filename.txt path/to/local/directory"
where <port> is 22

Funny thing even I think a bit like

(maybe because on Mac I use little snitch and on PC my whole stuff is legal)

But on the other hand "let the children play", trying something like this, why not. Maybe It can help someone.

 

means not they not log something...or little this and that...i think tone2 isnt the only one....other do it less and better i think..
but some entry or over doing but i prefer to have a all runnin nice for ever...
so eg i put in ableton...
or as safety when you can click easy by error on button in warez plug and connection to dev site is build up..

Ok let me elaborate,
the hosts file only block ip address tied to a hostname so 127.0.0.1 = www.somesite.org.
So the opening post drove in the wrong direction right away.

A large host file can also potentially cause major slowdowns
on browsing websites with windows. (7 at least)
Which can be fixed, if you want to get into flushing your DNS cache and all.

add to that the major annoyance you'll go thru,
when a developer's website magically seems to be down al the time.

It's kinda funny how this fits in the digital hoarding addiction.
However, I realize now the TS requested not to discuss this.
so I won't go further into this and someone should make a separate topic.

If someone publishes a HOSTS file isn't a proof he/she is using k'd software.
Some (e.g. 50) entries in the HOSTS file doesn't slow Windows down at all.

If there is really a speed or other problem with a huge HOSTS file, there is an extreme easy way to circumvent that: Define two HOSTS files (HOSTS.open and HOSTS.closed and rename them with a .BAT file (batch) as you need.

 

I asked teh WFC Author, he told me that an application executed without admin rights can't change firewall rules or other Windows Firewall setting. That in conjunction with secure rune seams to be quite good.

and in fact it makes me faster cause i never connect to shit like otto normal surfer does connect to shit sites a shitload full per hour

Mine (attached) is big. Change zip to rar. Zip is like snot on your fingernail - you can't get rid of it and it spies. I have my own DNS servers, so it doesn't slow anything down at all.
