fingerpicking ? playing electric guitar like an acoustic guitar. add some vibrato.

not what you asked, but this is one of my favourite guitar player in the entire universe playing some awesome fingerpicking acoustic guitar.

 

First track's harmony is wrong (third chord), very jarring..

 

Do you genuinely think there are wrong chord combinations? That's very strange to me. That someone could go for a feel or a mood that might not fit a "normal" pop song structure and some people would say that it's "wrong" instead of "unusual". Like there are rules. Weird.

 

This doesn't really seem like any one particular style or genre, just some kind of spooky little riff with a vibrato.
If I were to look for a samplepack like this, I'd probably search for something like "moody, spooky lo-fi guitar riffs for vampires" or something.

 

Ok maybe I exagerated..

Ofc harmony is not set in stone, there's no fixed rules per se..

To make an analogy, you can take your mountain bike and follow a path,
or you can go across the forest and don't give a damn..

But certain types of modulations, can produce an amount of dissonance/ambiguity that can be perceived as excessive, or out of place.


In this case the track is based in Em,
then it modulates with the A#m-b5 chord (b5 is implied) to some sort of E Dorian #4 tonality, (or call it A# or Bb Locrian b4,bb7),
and then it goes to a Bminor chord.

The first change to A#m-b5 is correct, and quite interesting.
Harmonic Minor modes are not used often like this, and much less in a mainstream/pop song.

However it's the third Bminor chord which, even if Correct by all means and Diatonic to both E minor or E Dorian #4,
creates an harmonic effect which to my ear sounds a bit unsettling..

And the Vibrato effect makes it more Pronounced.
(or maybe the guitar/note is out of tune, what do I know..)

So yeah I stand corrected, what they did is not wrong per se,
just a bit too "risky", or not smooth enough of a transition (to my taste),
in contrast with the following Dmaj chord and the Regular Emin tonality to which it resolves.

It's an acquired taste I guess.

Maybe if they included the nat 7th on the B minor chord, it will be less ambiguous,
and more defined inside the whole E Dorian #4 tonality.

But that would make it be even more dissonant/dark,
and more contrasting with the following Dmaj chord.. (as long as it's not D-aug)

Imo Ambiguity is a big part of the effect here.

maybe you should found your imitating samples by yourself
at least, do something by yourself if you're just a wannabe copycat.
you'll find this type of guitar sounds on maaaaany recordings.
Musical culture and knowledge is important if you wanna be a somewhat """"good"""" imitator.

its weird how 90% of advices asked here are mostly "how can i imitate this trendy thing"

 

i didnt notice anything wrong, and i dont know about the technicalities of music theory,
and the guy playing it seems to be spanish, that may explain the untraditionality of his playing,
and that song is not a mainstream pop song really..

Everybody's ear/brain is different, and can have a different perception of things/harmony,
or tolerance to tuning..

This can be a cultural thing or an acquired taste sometimes,
and also a Refined ability as you become more experienced with Music in general,
and with Harmony in concrete (if you study it and practice it enough).

For instance I'm very, or even wholly tolerant of the detune level found in other culture's music,
like say Turkish/Moroccan Maqams, Hindu Ragas or Javanese Gamelan, all of which frequently use microtonal tuning/harmony.

For some reason I always found this to be very natural sounding/appealing,
and took it as it came.

But for whatever reason in this track, I found the harmonic changes + possible tuning of the guitar + vibrato effect,
a bit too close to the limit for my taste.

It may be because either:
the guitar notes were not fully tuned/intonated well enough,
because the vibrato effect distuned it too much,
because the harmony/changes are unusually dissonant and carried suddenly, or not smoothly enough..
or a mix of the above.

But for whatever reason it happened,
and that's what I reported and tried to explain/analyze in harmonic terms.

I'm also Spanish, and what he's playing has no relation whatsoever to the Spanish nationality, music or culture, in any way.

If he was playing Phrygian/Phrygian Dominant,
or playing guitar in any way that remotely resembled Flamenco, (or even Celtic music as in Galicia)
Okay you'd have a point..

But he's not, so I can't imagine what made you think so.

As D_R said, it's just a little simple riff,
basically over-lining the chord changes with Tonics and Thirds, and a Vibrato effect.

The special and interesting thing about it is imo its Harmony..

Vibrato with a bit of pitch modulation.

The music a bit meh to me and sounds like filler to up- count the number of tracks on an album.

 

i dont like the song either, but the artist said that its her favorite song on the album..

 

Sounds like a plucked nylon string fed through a vibrato pedal. Easy to DIY.

Would like to add, when a dance label for instance licences some big, known hits for their compilation, we are all writing filler for the label specifically to get a share of the royalties and maximise on the promotion from the unit sales that will be due to the known tracks. When there were physical sales!
But that's in a game where it's all about making money off the back of the known tracks, and maybe whoever compiled or mixed the album.
I didn't actually check the video in question yet, so maybe I should have kept quiet!
I just feel like there's filler and there's filler.
Different with band, different with compilation album.
Probably more skill & effort from 'filler' from individual artists who want to get noticed as opposed to an extra throwaway instrumental per side of a band album.
