For that amount, one could also buy:

    - a PC that kicks some serious ass

    and additionally, for example:

    - a Neumann TLM-103 mic (€ 975) PLUS

    - an Universal Audio LA-610 MKII Channel Strip (€ 1,600) PLUS

    - an RME UCX Audio-Interface (€ 1,049) PLUS

    - a pair of Adam A7X studio monitors (€ 1,000) PLUS

    - AKG K702 headphones (€ 269)

and one would still have around € 1,000 left for a DAW with a bunch of plug-ins, or just a nice 2-week holiday somewhere (well maybe not in Monaco :bleh:).

So if I had to decide, if...

    - to buy a high-end Apple Mac like yours, or

    - a strong PC, a killer recording chain, an excellent interface with very good monitors and a great headphone + a DAW with plug-ins

... I personally would not have to think about it for very long.

    :grooves:

(I would choose the Mac, of course)

You can more or less build a Hackintosh iMac from the same parts, except maybe it will be a bit better :bleh:

Couldn't agree more, since I started school, I didn't learn anything useful. Just history, how to write music reviews and stuff like that. And based on the subjects, it won't get better.
That really saddens me since I looked forward to it so much and it's just waste of my energy/time/money. I had much better success when I learnt alone, that really helped me to keep the inspiration flowing.

My advice for Robbie, get good books and private teacher, use your current machine no matter how slow it is (you can always freeze tracks), optimize your OS to the maximum extent, download tutorials, listen to any music genre in your spare time (listening helps a lot).

This is probably what am I going to do.

And don't forget the value of collaborations, find someone on these forums that you dig and has more of the skills you're looking to get and see if you can't work with them on something. I think that in addition to your solo studies this could really help you on your way. Also stay tuned because I will be putting up lots of good learning resources coming soon.

The subjects fall under "musicology", the name of the school would not help anything

Well, I don't mind learning useless stuff (I'm kind of used to it  ), but we get TONS of homework completely unrelated to music, so I cannot focus on my projects :( (that soundtrack for indie video games is still waiting on me, no progress at all)
