Cubase 11: Buy or not?

Discussion in 'Cubase / Nuendo' started by Vincent Price, Feb 17, 2021.

  1. Hello

I am currently on Cubase 10.5 Pro, running on a Mac mini late 2012, 16GB, i7 Quad-core with 3TB SSD

Is it worth me upgrading to Cubase 11 Pro?

I also have a MacBook Pro Retina 2015 which I am planning on using as my secondary machine when away from my main studio. However, I am unsure as to whether to put Catalina or Big Sur on it.

Many of the upgrades to Cubase pro 11 are replicas of fabfilter and Izotope plugins. Scales assistant is very good.. If you do a lot in midi.
New metering plugins are really good. I would look at the update features and decide it is worth it for you.. Sample pack libraries added are just bloatware... For $100 Canadian.. I would say it is easily worth it. Cheaper then some VST plugins that do that same thing...

I love Cubase and I update every year. I have yet to see a DAW that compares for features..
    Cheers

    Short answer; no.
    Long answer; nope.

Read some threads on the Steinberg forum. People are fed up with it and many of us stopped updating.
Nothing and i mean nothing really ground breaking and only a must buy if you run a studio, for compatibility issues.
IMO this is slowly the beginning of the end for Cubase, they chose the wrong path, i give it a few more years, things in the world are changing very fast.

Sampler track is a decent upgrade if you use loops. Scale assistant is nice if you don't know any music theory. Overall €99 is not too much for all new features IMO.

When is the best time to update? Last year there weren't any great offers, late 2019 there were because of the 30 y. anniversary. My strategy would be update every year so i'd spread the cost over the years, as Cubase remains my no. 1 DAW in the studio.

Also maybe start with Catalina, as you can always update to Big Sur when you're sure most plugins an drivers work well with it.

My 2 cents it is worth the upgrade. Sadly, I believe $150 per year is a bit high and expectation of features should be high as well.

As with most things, it’s worth it if the new features are of use to you. I personally thought it was and no regrets, seems stable (more than previous initial releases), and for me it was a no brainier.

I’d only get it if you do orch mock-ups... I have 11 Pro and it’s filled w redundant functions n stuff. Nothing u can’t do in other DAWS. But the expression maps for orchestral stuff is next level compared to other DAWS. Logic isn’t far behind, but Cubase is a clear winner in that area

If money is no object then sure thing, if it is, then I'd wait until the summer sales, pick up the upgrade then (usually 40-50% off) but don't carry out the upgrade until v11.5 is released in November usually. This way, you get two updates for the price of one due to the grace period if you can be patient. I did it when I upgraded from 9.5 to 10.5, but as it happened, v10.5 was buggy as hell, so was using v10 mainly.
Some of the updates on v11 are nice and people on the forum are saying that it's the most stable release for years.

Same here but I was updating from 9 to 10 to11 not the point 5 releases. So about 35$ per 2 years when bought with the summer sale and then wait for the grace period.

I made a thread on a little update trick if you own the legit license for pro:
You can copy the files of the new sampler track from cubase 11 pro directory or elements extended (easier) and paste these in your legit install folder (you can make a backup of the original files).
Ive got the latest sampler track from v11 running without any problems in my cubase 10 pro.
I also did the same with plugins, but it has a tiny bug- the channel eq gets reversed for some fkn reason.

Hope for more ground breaking interesting features.

  16. Well considering that I have the Native Instruments S61 MK2 that has chord mode features, I wouldn't say it is particularly worth me getting the upgrade to Cubase 11 Pro

I think I will wait till there are some features that cubase doesn't have already and in the mean time, learn a new DAW

im not sure, i havent tried these as i dont really use these right now. But you can try it, if you can find the files for these features you can paste them into the original directory. Will probably work.

I have 10.5 and the 11 upgrade didn't appeal to me. Although when they release 11.5 if it has anything worth upgrading for, I'm just gonna end up paying pretty much the same as if I'd bought the two upgrades separately, so I guess it doesn't really matter when you upgrade.

My opinion - the scales thing was pretty cool. The spectralayers thing looks cool. Most of the 11 update seemed to focus on plugins that I already have from other developers. $100 is a good value for those plugins alone, but it seems to me that most people who would be upgrading to C11 probably already have fabfilter and izotope. I wasn't upset by it like much of the Steinberg forum, I just didn't find it worth the money for me. Just my two cents.

I'm not sure what Cubase can really do at this point that would really make it worth it to me though. they more or less have everything I need. If they upgraded VariAudio somehow, I'd buy in. If they introduced parallel processing like Ableton or Studio one, I'd certainly go for that. Unfortunately there were a bunch of dumb old curmudgeons on the Steinberg forum who were opposed to the idea of expanding the max number of inserts to 16 (max 8 inserts in 2018 lol), so I'm sure those same people would be bickering if Steinberg did anything else to bring their plugin handling into the 21st century.

Lots of other DAW users wish many of the Cubase features, and vice versa, no DAW is complete. All this competition leads to innovation, which is great for us.
I'll certainly get the v11 upgrade in the summer sales (unless they cancel it ) and upgrade when 11.5 comes out, two upgrades for the price of one. One good thing Steinberg have done with the v11 release is that upgrades from older versions are cheaper, you can upgrade from Cubase 4 to v11 Pro for £136! Previously, it could have cost close to £400, they have taken a leaf out of NI and Reason (and others perhaps) with the upgrade path me thinks.
