Oh you changed the thread title

  3. Yeah, I had one last track I quickly knocked out this afternoon to leave this project behind. It's on the front page if you missed it.
    There. Changed it again. Sorry.

Yesterday you were talking about a direction for a new album and got some encouraging responses.

And today, you've decided it's not a new album but your last release and you're taking a break.

If that change of heart is because of the feedback from here, then I would suggest you need to re-think.

Feedback is a gift and should be treated as such.

Man, I really doubt your voice is as bad as you think it is. Why don't you send me an untreated clip? Let me be the judge.

And even if it is that bad, man, if Bob Dylan can do it, so can anyone else...There are many examples of bad singers with successful careers out there.

You know, it's very common for people to hate their own voices. I'm a professional singer (or used to be) and sometimes I have a hard time mixing my own stuff because I can't stand my voice.

How did I solve it? I pretend it's not me and approach the production as if it was someone else. It helps.

Anyway, and this is very important because it's a technical thing, easy to learn: You need to refine your autotune technique.

Since you said you're using it to fix issues, not as a creative tool, you need take your time and learn how to use it stealthily.

Melodyne is the better choice, really. You have to set word by word manually. You have to be careful to set the transitions correctly. You can't exaggerate in eliminating undesired vibrato. Sometimes you have to split the start, middle and ending of a word and treat just the middle, because the start and ending parts are the most critical to make it work naturally.

Forget about the "auto" part of the vocal tuning. The whole process must be done manually, if you want it to sound natural.

By the way, I've noticed you changed the thread's tittle. Why?

It feels like you're giving up after hearing a little bit of (very constructive) criticism. Is that it? If it is, please, consider changing your mind.

  6. Your feedback, and all feedback is appreciated and all accepted with gratitude for you taking the time to listen. Yes, I have had a change of heart, but not due to any criticism.

I began this project late last year to help a friend who has a degenerative disease whereby he can no longer play his guitar nor even speak. So he emailed me some lyrics which were a diary of his feelings and thoughts. I found them quite moving and informed him that we would create and release an album. He has never been a professional musician in any sense, so for him it was an exciting prospect. The seventeen songs we did were done in a style that I created to sound like it was his album. The Artist name is a combination of our surnames. All the songs are guitar based acoustic music. I am a synth fanatic.
It wasn't meant to be a full time, all consuming project. But I thought that perhaps I may still find a way forward due to my friends enthusiasm at seeing Bandcamp plays which are all thankfully due to the people here. So I told him that we could do more music with a tentative view to completing another album. However, for me, it would have to be different. Hence the first title of the thread. I can't keep rewriting the same song over and over.
But what became apparent is that when singing his lyrics in my voice, it sounded like that same album. So my view changed over the writing of the last two songs as did the post heading. I am not feeling injured by any critiquing of my music or singing. I am being honest with myself and saying that I can't do another album in this way.
