Been producing for awhile now, and a lot of my sample packs on FL are low quality, mixed with a few HQ kicks, snares, claps, hats, OH, cymbals, etc throughout the packs.

Was wondering, what are some, what you deem "essential" drum kits. This can be for RNB and HipHop/Trap. I know it's all personal taste, and a lot of the high quality ones are overused, but I'm looking to only stick to high quality samples because it takes too long to process all the cruddy samples, and they sometimes mess up a mix.

Any suggestions would help, although no BWB, Cymatics, KSHMR, boi1da, zaytoven, or illmind.

personally, i find myself using DECAP's Drums That Knock kits, Kenny Beats cave drum kits i find off Reddit, as well as various sample packs by The Kount and OSHI. for me, they provide quality sounds that are usable and fit well in a mix, but at the same time, the sounds aren't always all recycled. you'll find some unique stuff. it's all down to taste, but i think you will enjoy using them. i believe Monte Booker just dropped his own kit as well; might be worth picking up. also check out Cookin' Soul kits.

Lately I have been enjoying videos by Marlow Digs, who makes old school Boom Bap/Hip Hop on an MPC with samples from vinyl. He recommends Cookin Soul & Deadly Drums. I got these & so far I'm happy with them.

Do they have anything royalty-free? I thought they went plaquey via their packs and other producers just using but not clearing it. For the most part of course, sure they have their own Wave of success recently.

That would refer to their midi or melody loop kits.
But they also have a lot of drum kits.

it's funny to see that when hiphop was a thing, we all lowered the bitrate of our samples to 8bit to make them more rough. Now instead there is the need for hi quality samples ...

I thought they had useful / royalty free stuff, too. But I was wrong.

Just checked back wavsupply. The kits product page gives no information about being royalty-free. Only in the FAQs we have:

MIDI & Loop Kits are Royalty Free for selling beats which contain the MIDI / Loop files. This includes Leases and Exclusives online.

As for placements with major artists and or major labels, all samples/files must be cleared with the owner of said file / WavSupply before seeking profit.

I heard Taz Taylor somewhere talk about like "people don't understand when they buy off wavsupply, they still have to clear everything as it is not royalty-free".

It's tricky but I read "all samples/files must be cleared". Their and common definition of major placements is everything except for some indie stuff (that is not somehow connected to the big publishers). As of today, they would not hunt you down for some royalties on a couple of streams for example. But as soon as things go up, Taz is waiting for you.

If still in doubt, at the bottom of the FAQs you find:

The creator of each individual kit is entitled to a royalty/performance split percentage if the beat gets placed with a major artist and/or major label. As for producers uploading beats using the sounds, the credit is not mandatory unless stated in kit description.

I don't know what info they put inside the kits. Can you confirm drum kits having royalty-free info? I guess their business model leads them to even tighten everything further down when supplying kit info.

    I recommend:

    9th Wonder Kit
    Decap Drums that Knock
    Kount Drums
    Hit Kit V3

Additionally I use plugins like Wavesfactory Legacy Drums and Addictive Drums 2 for acoustic drum loops to layer with the above mentioned ones.
Whatever you do, I don't recommend going to r/drumkits and to start hoarding random libraries. That stuff will drive you insane. 500 Different kick samples should be more than enough. You don't need 100gb of sample libraries in my opinion.

If in doubt you are better off emailing the source instead of asking a random on the net with no affiliation.
Saying something can be royalty free but needs clearance if it's for a major could be a bit of a loophole.
In general I wouldn't worry about drum hits that people have personally made to be sold in drum kits.

For Hip Hop MSXII, Drumbroker and BoomBap Labs are all pretty good choices.

I still chop breaks to use in Battery or on the MPC but one of my favorite drum kits is actually a rompler\vsti and it's Addictive Drums 2. XO by XLN-Audio is pretty dope also. There's also a drum sampler by decomposer called Sitala that is quick and easy to use but i think the overall sound comes down to the processing. (EQ,Compression, Sat, etc.)
But my suggestions are based on Boom Bap.

I made myself a lil drum library with an MPC and vinyl when I was a teenager
A while back I've discovered a huge ass collection of drumbreaks and use them ever since, DM me for link
Don't forget to layer sounds and use basic filtering... et voilá you've made a drumkit that is better than the crap everyone else has :)

Edit: The only commercial drumkit I like is Alchemists because I'm a huge fan of his beats and could finally analyze the drums in detail

I love the way you look at that stuff with ease. Because that way you are open to a much broader variety of sounds.

I'm not in doubt. It's not just a bit of a loophole. It is part of Taz business strategy. Get his work into major channels with the help of that royalty-free non-royalty-free confusion. Negotiate a deal after the fraud has been published.

Everything that is not tagged as royalty-free is not. One might think by spending money on a kit you get the possibility to use that stuff royalty-free. But only if you buy stuff that is royalty-free you can stop the worries.

I checked a Wavsupply kit from sissy site. No royalty-free information inside (which would actually be irrelevant in the case of not having paid for the kit).

If you intend to use their stuff, you better e-mail them before releasing on a major channel.
