Audiosex is currently trying to get a whole new production section dedicated to, well, anything production. Catalyst put a topic with a few genres in mind to get it going, but it seems that the reaction was very minimal, even though there was 3 month coupon at stake. If you missed it, here's the link to what the whole thing was about

    http://audiosex.pro/index.php?/topic/8627-uploadednet-3-month-coupon-contest/

With that out of the way, my intention for this topic is to get somewhat of a "guerrilla poll" going about what YOU, the members, think the genres should be. The idea is pretty much self explanatory and straight forward. Just respond to this topic with what your desired genre would be and................. voila! From there you can pretty much guess what's gonna happen. Theres unfortunately gonna be a cap to how many genres there is, Saint or Catalyst will decide on that number, I'm guessing. So if you can, try picking one that branches out to multiple sub genres within it, that way no one is left out. This place is 6000+ strong, so spread the word and get people in here to get this thing going! :mates:

Yeah but ghost all the answers in the poll are contained within each of the genres so there's no need to choose. It's not like you have to pick between synthesis and composition in Industrial for example because the section can incorporate both. It's not so much a production section since we already have a section for working with sound, the focus of that section is on genres and the arrangement, composition, synthesis, etc. that goes into them. I know that some people might think that other genres should have been chosen but there is a reason I chose these and I'm positive even if I had chose the ones people wanted there still wouldn't be any movement yet. The irony is that just a little while ago we didn't have a genre section, nobody felt a void and now that we do suddenly people are missing the void of their genre when they wouldn't have had even the ones we have now. Metal, Pop, Rock, etc. is nothing special, it's been done to death on every forum. I chose 2 that are not standard and 2 that are to give a little uniqueness to the section and some much needed familiarity. Film/Video Game Scoring can also contain practically any genre as it isn't really a genre in and of itself so it could be anything from Classical to Rock, it's just geared towards film and game production.

I got you, man. The whole three question poll is to get a feel if people really do want a production section and what they would expect to find within it in general, regardless of the genre. Also to see if members would even part take within the section if it was available. The Guerrilla Poll is this whole topic itself, which is basically putting out what members think the genres should be.

Just think of it as collecting data, a sort of R and A, which can never be a bad thing. Especially when you got 6000+ members who are not all the same but the same at the same time lol. I'm just curious onto what this topic can bring and thats why I decided to roll with it. I'm basically just gathering the numbers because most time, if you got the numbers, you can't fail because numbers don't lie. :dunno:

Also, in all honesty, you can delete this topic if you feel that it doesn't benefit the birth of a production section.

    Broad spectrum of Genres:

    1. Rap/Hip-Hop
    2. EDM
    3. Pop/RnB
    4. Classical/Orchestral/Cinematic
    5. Rock/Country/Live Instruments

Then maybe add sub-genre's if there's enough traffic & users want more specific sub-forums.

I think Tips & Tricks -regardless genre- could be interesting if it´s approached in a informal and self-experience way. For me is great when somebody shares his self-taught methods or common approachs to things. You could read tons of articles and books and watch hundreds of tuts about micing a drum set with 24 HQ mics and then you find somebody getting a nice sound with just three. The same applies for writing, plugs used, mix planification, live gear... I´m sure everybody here developed some really personal-maniac steps to make music happens.

Well said, Mr. carl! Thats one thing I'm sure a production section won't lack, good questions will always get good answers! And it seems to me that people here won't don' mind sharing what they know with each other, just as long as someone ask.

I'm not averse to having that in the future but so far we have common sections like Electronic which is a million genres and Rap and I have yet to see posts there. I have a list of the genres I'd like to see here and it's big, you guys already know I'm diverse but I need to know that at least a few of the ones we have now are being filled. Also if I left it up to everyone Industrial wouldn't even be considered because of mob rule and that's not fair because I think the genre is really amazing and original plus it would make us unique which we are. Honestly I've seen more people taking an interest in that genre than practically any other and that's why the Industrial production thread I opened got a few pages of posts immediately. I'm the kind of person I start with unique and work my way down but I've also included 3 other genres that appeal to most of the people here and there's also DJ which we had before. The best way to get sections in here is to make posts related to the section you desire and once we have a healthy batch we can add a section. When we do upgrades on these forums we'll add more subdivisions because hopefully by then we'll have at least some posts here. I'd really like for us to give this a shot because I know where I'm going with it and I've already put in a lot of work to make this happen, not to mention SAiNT who I had to pull off of the new Audioz when I came up with this idea in the first place. The genre selection was not only my decision because as a team we discuss these kinds of things. However by all means you guys can vote on what sections you'd like to see here, who am I to stop you?

xbitz Good list !! I think I'll print it and put it on the wall. Even thoug I'd add:
Remember to put a enormous poster on the door that says: Dont disturb, do not enter, biohazard etc...

The problem with genre specific organization is that you'll surely have a lot of things duplicated.

Example: For mixing, decide the frequency range /placement of each component of your mix and cut each with low/high pass to sit in its frequency range, don't let the guitar or the piano etc.. take all the frequency range (Unless it plays alone) Once filtered It may sound weird alone, but will sound right in the mix.

This advice apply to all genre.

Beside, if we go genre specific, we take the risk that someone will say that complextr'n'b is a different genre than Just'n'Bib's dog rhythm,
so will we assume all sub-genre that are created each time a marketing adviser get his pills with whiskey?

Of course you don't mix rock and roll drums the same way as EDM (supposedly, but why not?) but htere are much more in common to all genre than differences.

It is a question of angle/focus. If someone does a tutorial/explanation how to do an EDM Kick this surely wont serve for other styles,
but if we share about how to think drums, then we will learn a lot more. Don't give me fish, show me how to fish.

That's a good point Olymoon and hopefully with focus on genre specific information we can avoid this. My idea for that section is an Industrial sample collection which will list good packs for Industrial samples as well as some sites online that would also serve well in this matter. I am going to be posting some good articles and videos on Industrial drums plus other elements and some other information I've found on the net. Then some users made some pertinent comments in the Industrial Music Production thread I started and I'd give each of those a separate thread so we can talk about the arrangement and composition, kinds of timbres, processing options, effect chains, etc. If people approach this with genre in mind I think the kinds of topics created will stick to the subject, we may have some overlap but hopefully it will be only a little.

That's a real good point, we don't want duplicates of things floating around. The whole point of this is to gather important information, after I have enough and it's collected, if we even get that far, we can go from there. I see you didn't throw in your ideal genre(s), you should, mate. Your part of this place and it would be real cool if you contributed to the guerrilla poll. :mates:

He already did, he's one of the people that was really excited to get a new Film/Video Game Scoring section and campaigned for it with some other members. *yes*

Catalyst - This isnt a dig, but.. I find it very difficult to read your long posts due to your lack of use of paragraphs... I tend to skip over your longer posts for this reason.

    Compare posts 12 & 13.

Just thought I would throw it out there. :mates:

I separate it when it's two unrelated things but it was all one subject. It also takes up less space and is the same amount of text. In the end it should save you time rather than waste it. So what are you going to do with those extra seconds? :dunno:

For someone like myself, tips and tricks would be ideal

I'd love to know the science and maths behind production but i just don't have the time (or the patience) to study it in depth, so a section where say everyone puts in their little hints would be great
