Is it the only plugin that won't be loaded?

By the way have you tried this audiogridder set up yet?
as a respected computer guy here, I'd love your opinion on the workflow.

Not yet. I tried Reaper's reamote and Vienna a couple years ago and they work fine, especially Reamote. Tthough Vienna cracked was buggy.
Don't have a complete decent 2nd PC yet when I got the parts I'm missing I'll test again.
I see what you're doing. Not sending more beers at the moment

it uses a fixed latency so that it can be compensated.

network/firewire/usb VST plug-ins do not differ here from a normal effect plug-in - which also introduces more delay than theoretically required to calculate the signal process.

    Exactly.
There are buffers EVERYWHERE in computer programs and hardware.
They are here to AVOID GLITCHES.

"multitasking" is just an ILLUSION of "at the same time" calculation.
Each core is a pipeline, there is nothing like "at the same time".
Every process running on each core is interrupted in a regular basis by another process on the same core.
Whatever is your CPU, even a 16 cores.

When you chain two plugins, EACH plugin got an INPUT buffer. To compensate for "data feeding" interruption from source AND/OR previous plugin in the chain.
More plugins on a track = more latency
    ALWAYS

That's why SINGLE CORE frequency is important : DAW will put ALL plugins of the SAME TRACK on the SAME CORE, to reduce global latency on that track and avoid "buffer under run" glitches between plugins.

Of course, there are buffers in USB controllers, LAN cards ... too.
That's why global latency stack VERY fast

not to nitpick but for future reference: the input buffer is an extra thing. the input buffer for audio plug-ins is just one vector, usually 32 samples (less than a millisecond)

but then effects are allowed to add as much delay as they want, and the host will just play the tracks accordingly earlier and delay the other tracks.

it not many effects which require that, but some cant live without, for example compressors, IR reverb, FFT based filters.

luckily today you dont have to think about much. it just works. 20 years ago every DAW had another implementation, some were supporting PDC only on some tracks and others not... terrible chaos. :)
