I want do do a proper mixtape of some of my songs.
I have been djing for some time and also have good equipment for that but I feel like I could never do such a good job in livemixing as I could with 'DAW' mixing and listening over and over until I created the perfect transitions etc. So I wondered If there is any Mixing software that is capable of life-mixing and later on editing the parameters inside the mix (like within a DAW after recording MIDI). Any information highly appreciated.

Not sure if I got your problem right, but if you're live mixing with drum machines/samplers/synths you can connect them to an audiointerface and a laptop and record each of them on a separate track and even audio and MIDI separately. You just need to setup outgoing MIDI channels for the hardware and different MIDI channels and audio inputs in the DAW.

 

take a look at cantabile. the solo and performer editions both allow you to record your live sessions audio and midi. this could be imported to the daw of your choice. there is a free trial so you can see if it will work for you.

hey, thanks for the replys! I maybe discribed it not the best way. I wanted to know if there is a DJ-Program like Traktor, Recordbox, etc. where you can do live-mixes and it records only the midi data of what you do, then after finishing life-mixing having the opportunity to correct some parts if for example tempo or start point wasnt 100% matching or other issues.

Sometimes I hear incredible mixes (refering to dj mixes) where there are only most perfect transitions one after another and best fitting effects for more than 2h in duration without the smallest possible mistake. Then I ask myself how to get such a mix. Is it so that this is only achieved by mixing in a DAW or are those mixes really done 'live' with proper preperation and alot of practise? How are big labels doing their mixtapes that come sometimes on the end of an album (monstercat for example) where there should everything be 100% superb in quality?

 

I will tell you this much. Back in the days it was done using multi-track tape recorders because syncing 2 disco tracks was a mission and if you wanted a "perfect" tape that was the best way to go about it. We would mix tracks one at a time by "punching in" if anything went wrong we repeated the process.Things improved with freestyle music in the 80's and later with house and techno. Nowadays, that is no longer necessary. If you can't mix perfectly the current tracks with the available DJ software you are in the wrong profession. Every song out there has been quantized and tempo matching as well as key matching is easier than anything else. With that said, the best way is to build a play list beforehand. It takes a little time and practice but it is worth it. You select songs based on their tempo, key, and the energy you are trying to transmit and take it from there. One track at a time. This has been the formula since the early days,and it is not going to change. One problem with such an approach for live sessions is that you become too predictable and the crowd might make you deviate from the original plans. Finally, if you want to make a "perfect" mix simply dump each song as an audio track in your DAW. You then drag each track to the point of previous song where yu want to mix the current one, and sync it to previous one automatically or manually. Automate the fade-ins and fad-outs. Advantage is a perfect mix and that it will take you minutes to make a 2-hour tape.

 

I already know all of this what you said... I am not dumb and also not new in the game. I can mix perfectly but even so there is a high chance that within a mix of 2hours+ there would be a minor issue that I maybe would have changed. Nobody can do lifemixing for hours without any smallest possible mistake, its simply not possible by the human nature. By smallest possible mistake I mean something that listeners would possibly not even recognize.

 

Try Mixmeister Fusion, for non-linear editing/dj-mixing of your seamless dj-studio-mix. It's old\defunkt, but still does the job.
Alternatively, early versions of Traktor had the 'dub' function, that would allow you to jump back to a point in your mix where you could restart/resume your recording.

Some DAWs have the ability to record your midi from live performances and allow you to re-stage and correct, everything from lights to triggers to whatever can send a signal. The two that I am familiar with are Main Stage and Digital Performer.

Abelton Live I hear is also capable and can interact with DJ controllers and control transitions etc... There is a guy on here who DJs for money live and I think with Abelton Live, @Trevor Gordon . Maybe ask him nicely without spitting in his eye maybe you two guys can be friends

 

You should be able to mix any song with another. Like going from an up-tempo to a ballad. Knowing your music.

I was friends with two of the top DJs in the Washington, D.C. area in the late 80's/early 90's. These guys could mix any two songs together without the audience on the dance floor getting upset. Paid request required a quick change of material using the proper length of crossfade. at the top of their game, these guys still practice missing with new material as it came in. Some directly from dance labels.

Modern DJs require the same skills coupled with using DAWs setup to accomplish the needed work flow.
