@manhill You have not, and will not, find the perfect compressor. The perfect compressor does not exist. There are good compressors both vst and hardware. What you need to learn is the "perfect" compression settings for the material to which you are trying to apply compression to. That is something that takes time to learn but once you have mastered will lead to your mixes sounding unique. In other words, instead of searching for something that does not exist learn to use what you already have.

Perfect compressor.... What does it mean? Peak compression, rms compression?
    Maybe you use it wrong?
VCA, FET, Opto, VariMu, digitally clean, other types? Each one has different color/vibe etc. One for punch, another for glueing, for transient control.... Transparent or dirty... Emulation or perfect maths... Aggressive or silky...for tracks or for buss or for master... Technical problem solving or for groove... Vintage vibe or Modern EDM vive... Balance or squashing or pumping and soooo oonnnn...

ANALOG SSL or opto MS compressor, no VST.

the real thing/VST difference is still great.

If vst works (hundreds of different compressors), who cares?
When i mix, everything works. If I need FET, I use any FET by default - it works... And now I get superloud tracks, punchy, glued and no distortions at all, louder than Skrillex or any near 0dB RMS modern track. Not harsh. And no analog I need. Because I know what I do, and hear.

Transparent: Vertigo VSC-2 (vca style as well)

(for me)to create space in the mix with side chain: Softube FET

The stuff i use the most is UAD. For track applications, usually distressor because it’s so versatile and sounds so good. But that’s probably not much help to you. So natively...

Pro-C2, Presswerk and Boz Manic Compressor for the same reasons.

For specific color and vibe stuff... can’t go far wrong with Brainworx/PA. Townhouse comp sounds awesome on drums and bus, bx opto is an awesome workhorse. Vertigo VSC-2 sounds great at modest settings. I hear great things about the new vertigo plugs too but I’m not paying those prices...

Oops... There is such thing like RMS+3 (like in iZotope meters).... So, if Skrillex has tracks with about -3dB RMS, it is 0dB RMS+3...

    Boz Digital Manic compressor.
It has 6 different modes. All different. Very CPU friendly as all Boz plugins.
