Subject says it all, I'm really trying to like this DAW for mastering duties
Is there a way to fully get rid of the obnoxious white spaces in the GUI? (see screenshot)
I know there are options for theme-ing, however I can't seem to get rid of this.

I'm prepared to go all the way as far as change the appearance of windows itself to get rid of this

Keep it simple and use floating FX windows:
Right click the part that says "FX" on the FX button of the track, choose the effect you want to work on, enjoy :mates:

In addition, you can also activate the checkbox "Auto-float newly created FX windows" in the Options.

You will never have to see the ugly white area anymore. :winker:
edit: only if you want to change the order of effects or delete effects from the chain.

I don't like it either, therefore I always open the plugins directly, not the FX window.
The white colour is defined by Windows itself and you can change it there (at least for Win7 this still works):

    For example:

They need to fix that in the program, not force people to modify windows themes.

Interface is the weakest part of Reaper, UI looks very unprofessional, the same as linux software tremendous functionality in a poor shell. Maybe Reaper community should fund-rise and hire a graduated UI designer who could improve usability and make Reaper a king of DAWs.

I use two actions that you can see in this gif and add them to the contextual track menu and never see these blank space.

Yes, that is possible. However, since these areas are obtained from the windows theme, a dark windows theme is required.

I created a thread a while ago that deals with this topic:
    https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=228668

The "penumbra" theme is not absolutely necessary. You can choose freely from the dark win themes available on the internet. However, I strongly advise you to use only the "SecureUX" patcher I linked in the thread.

Many valid answers. @Polomo does what I do. Double-click the plugin.
If you right-click on the FX button you get a list of plugins in your chain and if you select one it opens without the "obnoxious white space".

In Windows 10, using Regedit, you can soften the default white (255 255 255) balance. See the screen shot below.
I change the values to 250 250 250 which give a paper like tint. Use the edit colors button in Paint to get required color
    value for your needs.

You have to restart the system for changes to take affect (logging off may also work).

Right, but a lot of DAWs are working like this. Back in the day I changed my Windows colour scheme and suddenly some of the lines in Cubase were hardly visible.

Firstly you cannot theme everything in reaper, secondly their isn't any professional theme in user library from the designer point of view that would come close to any major DAWs I've looked through all of them and then some users just want to simply make music not spend time on theming their DAW with such cryptic theming language.

Reaper's UI designer is a master of his craft, as you can see from the Slate plugins.
But with a low fingerprint on the hard drive, cpu and RAM memory, and a high level of customisability, there are compromises to be made. Whether you want to or not.

You are speaking of Slate plugins, as if it's something good. I would prefer the interface of Airwindows plugins than something from Slate.:) That designer guy has definitely bad taste.
