I wasn't attacking you with that comment lawl, I was speaking in general about women since you brought it up. I was actually laughing too

Sorry brother, sometimes my comments seem like they're directed at a specific person but most of the time they're not. I always speak in general and never specifically...unless it's audio related :)

    Thanks for this great video.

And still... David Foster Wallace talks a lot about DECISIONS in this video... that it's our decision how we feel and see things...
    that it's our CHOICE...

So what did he choose to decide in the end?
    To kill himself.

Now what does this tell us?

    I don't know. Tell me :(

Popular or not popular with the motorists, bicycles are here to stay and getting more popular each day. :) I love riding a bicycle, and especially passing cars waiting in a queue... I'm always compelled to give them a finger! LOL ;P

I'm of the opinion that cars are just not meant to be driven in the city. They are too big for just one or two people, and they pollute the air immensely. They are for longer travels between cities. Within the city peopole should use public transport, bicycles, roller-blades... whatever is small enough and doesn't pollute the air.

Actually that idea is interesting, specially for bigger cities. I mean not talking about cities with millions of people in it. Even cities with half a million residents, but many workplaces where people go to, have such an inactive traffic. You would need big parking spaces in front of the city, and a functional publich transportation system. Cars are not made for rush hour traffic in the cities, they waste fuel, pollute the air, they happen accidents every day, and people are so stressed and nerved they drive like maniacs, specially on the autobahn later (or highway, freeway, or whatever you call it elsewhere... but the autobahn is faster *yes* )

Hm, I think what he wants to tell us is to think about these situations differently from time to time. Realize that all the other people are in the same disturbing situations, perhabs had a even worse day. Realize you dont have to think its about you alone...
But I guess the video is more of an inspiration to overthink your own behavior and thoughts, not to really change anything.

I wouldn't go so far and say that.
I don't know if you ment it ironically?

It just made me think - if we really can choose to feel this or that way, as he claimed?

well he came off to me as someone who seemed like he had the answer and he was someone you could look up to...but deep down he was battling with his own demons.

But yeah, you are all correct. I am not the one to judge and I have no authority to do that. But I'm pretty sure that's a general perception people are going to have...

We're all battling our own demons. I don't think a moment of human frailty should invalidate a life of knowledge and wisdom.

Anytime I hear about a suicide the first words that come to my mind belong to Dante:

Libertà va cercando, ch'è sì cara,
come sa chi per lei vita rifiuta.

(He goes seeking liberty, which is so dear, as he knows who for it renounces life.)

Virgil was saying that to Cato about Dante's journey. I cannot find better ones.

    this is true...

but man, suicide is such a tough thing for both the person and the people around him. It may seem like a moment of human frailty, but suicide causes so much harm to everyone else afterwards. It's a relativity thing. Yes he was probably wise and had alot of knowledge, but I'd rather take word from another I can completely trust...and this is why aquiring the right knowledge is so important.

I'm very skeptical about who I follow and listen to, I don't care if a specific person is a genius...it's probably because through my culture and the specific society I've been exposed to had been run under tormented lies. My father grew up in a very decieving time where he used to live. He's highly proficient in the aspect of society, knowledge and politics and heavily analyses these areas in a crazy level of detail. Growing up watching him do that made me kind of like that as well.

I'm not saying the video we watched is pointless just because the guy commited suicide so don't get me wrong, but he is definately someone I can not look up to cuz it would frighten me to end up being like him. And that can happen cuz when you look up to someone you wan't to respect them and follow what they have done. And there lifestyle can waver off on you...so you have to be really careful.

It's the same with Kurt Cobain, I love Nevermind and Smells Like Teen Spirit, I respect the guys talent alot, but do you know how dissapointing and depressing it was for all those kids when the guy they looked up to commited suicide? It was a depressing year. It's really difficult for me at least to feel motivated and place my trust in someone like that, doesn't matter if he was a fantastic artist, I refuse to accept that individual as part of my sociological and cultural influence. I can only be subjected to it, like how I'm subjected to everything else...

EDIT: Btw, I'm not a part of Generation X, it was just an example, doesn't mean I didn't do my research or listen to Nirvana extensively...

Oh I know because I have personally lost people that were dear to me because of this. Like with anything you have to take what you need and leave the rest, this isn't an either or kind of thing. Surely it wasn't the knowledge that was shared in the video that drove him to it and all he was really saying was that perspective is key.

Well said mate. I think the most important thing is being open to different outlooks and methods of problem solving. Like Einstein said: "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them". Here this is evident in that our childish belief that we are the center of the universe is how we have solved the problem thus far (which is actually no solution at all) but it is in our rising above that notion that we gain a new perspective that allows us to overcome the boring monotony of everyday life by imbuing it with meaning and purpose.

Very intelligently said guys. Much peace to you all. And thanks to Someone for stimulating this conversation. And for Xbitz for sharing that video. This places all of us in a very good position where we remain considerate and understanding as well as analytical about complex social problems and circumstances, and we help each other figure it out and search for the answers.

Thanks for all your responses, it truly is a great eye opener

We've all just gained a fantastic wealth of knowledge and philosophical understanding.
